Well the weather did us in today. Cold, gray and blustery. Did fly another EDF that did pretty darn good.

I would think the HE-162 would handlaunch A-OK. Search youtube their is a video of a fellow tossing it by the fan unit!

<Edit> never mind I found it. Word to the wise, turn the sound down!

With weather going south here in NY the HE-162 did not fly this weekend.

Here is 1 observation though. I have a Riccs T-38. On it's maiden it also had a tendency to tuck in the roll axis.

It was flown again in less then desirable conditions Friday. 2 changes were made to the model. 1st was a slightly more rearward C of G. 2nd removal of the landing gear.

Perhaps this may work with the HE-162 as well?

My repairs are complete. Thought I'd show the tail break before repair.

Hmmm, that looks like a good place to slide a small dia. carbon rod about six inches long in from the back of the tail cone. That does look like a weak point.

I used a wooden skewer, carbonfiber would have been lighter.

I still haven't flown mine... The Vasa 65 is still somewhere between customs and my door.

Nevertheless I got it more or less finished in the meantime!

I followed the foam's inner structure when I cutted out the hatch on the top side of the salamander (there's loads of battery space available for my 4s 2500MAh setup). Rare earth magnets hold the cockpit area in situ now.

I added a NACA intake in the old battery compartment, fillered one gear mount and added a bit of wire mesh for the warm air to escape in the other gear mount position.

Oh, and that big canopy just needed a Pilot, right?

The paint job is Tamiya's TS5 on top and a bit of water based gray on the bottom. It looks much better that way, IMO. I'll add a shot of flat clear coat later, after I weathered the surface a bit...

I just hope that the fan unit will get here before X-Mas... I'm really looking forward flying the "Volksjäger" soon!

Best regards - Paco

Looking good RoverTomcat .
Let us know how the maiden goes.
What is the weather like in Switzerland right now?
We have cold, wind and snow. I am not even interested in flying in this stuff.

How much dirt do you expect the inlet to suck up on landing? I like it otherwise!

Hiya Tim!

At the moment the weather conditions are pretty much the same over here - cold (around 0-3° C), windy and generally unpleasant. That's why I spend most of the W/E in the basement, LOL! I hope for a bit of snow soon, 'cause it makes a soft cushion for the "not so perfect" landings.

Regarding the intake, it'll probably let a bit of grass and/or snow - if there's any - into the fuse, but I guess not too much.

Merlinfan: I'll take my trusty videocam with me when I maiden the Salamander...

Best regards - Paco

Finally the Vasa 65 showed up on the doorstep.

It's the first time I got a Mk2 Vasa 65 - the Fan is much better then the "old" Vasa with it's plasticky hub and glued in fan blades. Wow, that thing looks the biz.

I cutted off the front intake bellmouth from the fan housing, wrapped a bit of 240 grit sanding paper around the fan and sorta wiggled it in the Salamander's fan thingy. With a couple of sanding strokes, it was perfectly fitting without steps or gaps!

Now I need to find a plastic cup with the right size to create a jet nozzle on the back of the fan housing - I'm aiming for 90% FSA for the outlet.

Best regards - Paco

PS - sorry 'bout the crappy pic, I only had my phone camera with me yesterday.

And the last few pics of the finished article.

Now I hope for a day or two with no wind / fog / snow to maiden the Volksjäger!

AUW is a tad under 750G. I had to stick 15G of lead into the nose to get the CG right.

Best Regards - Paco
