Bit of help choosing a motor please for my Kyosho Spitfire 50EP

My Kyosho Spitfire 50EP has finally arrived, so now I'm looking for a motor and speed controller to power it, I have myself a 18.5V 6600mAh 5s Lipo already, but I'm having trouble choosing a motor.

I've been looking at Scorpion motors as they are easily avaliable in the UK, I need one to turn the recommended 12x8 prop and a speed controller for it.

Anybody got any recommendations please, especially from those who are already flying this bird

Thanks

Hey JuZ, If you have access to this motor it will do the job really well!

Here is my review on the S-4020-12

http://homepage.mac.com/kmyersefo/s4020-12/s4020-12.htm

ESC is up to you. There are a lot of choices to make about quality, availability and pricing, so it is difficult to recommend a given one. The motor is using a BP Hobbies/Suppo 70-amp ESC in its application now. Not one of the best controllers around, but it works and is relatively inexpensive. I am not recommending it, but I have a couple that I use myself. I just got a Scorpion 45-amp for another lower power application. You'd need the 6-cell Scorpion with the switching BEC if you wanted to go Scorpion. Of course, the Castle Creations ESCs are always a good choice as well.

I have both a 4020-14 and a 4020-12. The 4020-14 is installed and the plane flies fairly well on 6 cells with a 12x12 and 13x10 props. I intend to try the -14 motor with a 3 blade 13x9 prop and verify the in-flight amp draw with an Eagletree Micrologger before swapping the motor out for the 4020-12.

I went with a 6 cell Scorpion 90A ESC as it includes a switching BEC and has enough headroom for either motor. You could use a smaller A rated ESC from any vendor with or without a BEC depending on whether the one you purchase has a switching BEC built in.

For a 5 cell setup I'd definately look at the 4020-12 or maybe even the 4020-10 if you want more speed. the 4020-10 with a 12x10 prop looks to draw about 70A of current and produces 136 oz of thrust which will give you a nice thrust to weight ratio. The pitch speed is good to at 96.7 mph, all according to Scorpion Calc.

So the 4020-10 or 4020-12 are looking good, would you say I'd want the 90A or 120A Scorpion ESC to go with either, there's only 10 difference in price?

You could prolly do either but the 90A should be sufficient. I don't think either motor is rated for 90A+

I've got the 3 blade 13x9 prop mounted up and will test fly it by Sunday. I think I'll also take the 4020-10 motor with me to the field and test fly it on the 12x12 prop. Will post the Eagletree logs in the other Kyosho Spitfire thread here.

HI JuZ. I have the 4020-10 with a 90A Scorpion ESC turning a APC 13x11 prop on a Kyosho P 40 that weighs 6 1/2 lbs. Its pulling 61 amps on a 6s lipo. This plane is crazy fast. At half throtle it was as fast as any of my glow plans. For example, I have a Hanger 9 Sundowner with a OS 55 ax on it.

Well I went for the 4020-12 in the end, I don't think I'll really miss the extra speed of the -10.

Anyone have a recommendation for a 2 blade prop to go with the Scorpion 4020-12 & 90A Scorpion ESC?

How about something like a APC 16x10? Is there an online calculator for this kind of thing?
