Well it's a cute little thing, except for that big ugly gear guard on the front. It's a shame they went with IR on this one, I was hoping it would be RF like all the other iFly ornis. Still looks worth having though

Hi All, Mine is also channel B. Maybe they all are The guard on the front is removeable. They include 2 sets of spare wings and two extra guards. Seems to fly just as well without it and looks a lot better. It certainly isn't a living room flyer unless you have a very big living room! I've tried to slow it down without success so far. Gave up before I break it. I'll get a chance to test it again tomorrow in a larger space. Best, Bill

More Video

Hi All, I took off the guard and plastic body and the MAV flys a little slower and I think looks better. Here is a new longer video from this morning. I had it way up close to the rafters without a signal loss so the IR range is pretty good. Best, Bill

Bill, you're right, that looks MUCH better! Based on your new video the range looks quite impressive for IR. Looks like it flies well too, it has a bit of porpoising like the other iFly ornis, but it's zippy! Thanks for posting the pics and vids

Yeah that looks so much better. What was the weight savings Bill?

Definate candidate for a RF conversion

Well, the weight savings were minimal. The removed parts total about 0.4 grams. I didn't weigh it when fresh but it now weighs 4.5 grams so the production model must have gained weight since the original 3.5 gram announcement. The IR TX/rx is proportional and has good range. Main power is a 6mm motor. Steering is by a 3mm motor which acts as a tiny windlass to raise or lower each wing trailing edge. Ingenious but looks very fragile! It could be converted using a Butterfly RX I'm sure. The IR RX looks about the same size and weight so performance shouldn't suffer. I'm going to try some light cf rod LG next see if it will ROG After seeing Angry Monks tiny ornis at KIEF this is about as close as I'll ever get to flying a nano ornithopter and I'm really happy with it! Bill

It doesn't sound like much, but that's quite a bit! Shaving .4 g off a 4.9 g airframe is an 8% reduction in weight!

That's great Bill...

SO- is the tail motor definitely a 3mm motor? If so, then it's a never before seen motor. Even the tiny Shicoh is a whopping 3.2mm diameter, they did make a prototype 2.8mm motor but it never hit the shelves but this 3mm might be something worth using in the micro planes.
