Round the World backpacking trip with an AP rig! (Hawkeye)
As a few of you will know, I'm about to embark on a big trip with an AP plane.
My Girlfriend and I fly tommorow night [15th Oct 08] at 9.30pm.
I sold my house back in April, and we both gave up our jobs about Three Weeks ago.
I've been wanting to do something like this for a long time. For several reasons, now is a perfect time - not least to escape the misery of the credit crunch!!
We will be away for a Year. I'm counting on house prices being at rock bottom when we return...
Order of Countries:
Philippines [for Christmas]
Yes, I know, this may be a bit optimistic in a Year!
We may well end up forgoing our last flight in our 'round the World ticket' and return when we're done.
The plane I'm taking is the Hawkeye, made by regular RCG contributer Joel Sholz.
See here for details of the plane.
As you will see, it folds up really small and compact.
I actually don't know of any other set up that would meet my requirements.
I've flown it twice only since finishing it off, both times with ease. It flys nice and slowly, with no bad habits.
Assuming I don't get shot for flying somewhere I shouldn't [I'll be careful], expect to see some interesting shots here in the near future.
Before you ask [and I have been a lot] there isn't any room for you in my backpack!

Wow sounds like fun. Reminds me of MisterNiceGuys travels with his AP rig. He came over to my house when he was visiting California and shared some very amazing stories.
I noticed you will be in San Francisco California at some point in your journey. If you are going to be in Southern California area let me know. I have an extra bedroom/bathroom at my house and I will put you up for the night or nights, free of course. This might help with your travel budget.

What a great trip idea.
Will there be any issues with your radio frequency in some of those countries?
Hopefully it won't get lost by the airlines like mine did, flying out of Gatwick to Italy. I did get it about 4 days later.

Really good idea, anyone know how to switch the camera between photo mode and Video mode? Or, how to get those nice photos off from the video? Thankyou.

Paul have a great trip and I would not be in any rush to come back to the UK, I mean this in a the nicest way of course
Beach hut in Australia or New Zealand or living in a grime ridden UK city where your taxed to the hilt hmmmmmmmm let me think about that one for a second or two
Just one bit of advice mate if you find yourself in Cooper Pedy in Australia (nearish to Alice Springs) just be VERY careful if you get invited back to places it's the most dodgy place I've been to on this planet, people DO disappear there, so just be very careful and stick to the roads and footpaths if you do go out and about there, you can walk 10 feet off a road and end up at the bottom of a 200 foot uncovered mine shaft. I've been there I know what it's like and all I will say is keep your wits about yourselves.
Any way good luck take plenty of photos and enjoy it

Paul... I envy you even though I´m in a extended vacation 4 months in Hawaii...
But I would like to give you a hint...
Before you depart... change your radio gear to one of the new 2,4 ghz...
I sugest the SPEKTRUM DX5, 6 or 7...
It will be safer any place and specialy in Central America...
Have a nice trip a keep us posted when you can...

Have a great trip!
The BMFA should be able to help with which freqencies are legal in what countries.
I always get an itchy credit card when I see 747's taking off from Heathrow.
And if you find yourself near Chertsey on your travels you'd be very welcome, I'll leave the door on the latch.

Thank you for the well wishes!
Joe, did you get my email with photos and blurb as you asked?
Dave, thank you very much for the offer to put us up! We will be staying with Friends, and only for a short time before heading to Mexico.

Top notch, good luck.
Now with a handle of English electric, how can you not visit Cape Town and see the lightening flying???
Give a shout if you find yourself in South Africa between Dec and April you would be most welcome to stay.
Remember its important to maintain a sense of humour at all times!!
