Hoaye 5" fan test

I posted this in the scorpion thread and then realize it fits here better. Sorry for the cross post.
I got to test the HK 4035-800 in the Hoaye 5" fan today on 14S2P A123 2300s controlled by an OEM100HV. It was a learning experience to say the least. The first interesting thing I discovered is that I don't own a watt meter capable of sustained current flow above 70amps. After going the trouble of moving my desktop computer to the garage and connecting the Extrema it would not record anything but the volts. I went back to my trusty Astro and video recorder that did not record the information legibly from behind the protective 3/8' lexan. (I have serious respect for this fan setup) The Astro recorded the 88 amps for a while before starting to smoke, that is the only measurement I'm sure of but I'm pretty sure I saw the volts sag to 44 so the watts should be around 3900! The thrust I did get and at 13 lbs. 9 oz. It was pretty substantial. The back casing never got over 150 F even several minutes after running. The batteries got warm but not hot and the ESC never got warm

Sorry for such an incomplete report but it all I can get until I can get an Oracle 200a to data log it properly. The deans connectors feeding the esc get very hot and the battery wires (10GA) got warm. These power levels need a whole new approach to be reliable so changing to 6mm connectors on the ESC (that I have between the sub packs already) will be better. Changing to 14s3p may give a better indication of the performance on 12s high performance lipolys. The first taste of this setup definitely shows a lot of potential. Thanks Georges and Perry for getting this special motor to me.

I tested the motor again the nextday without the smoking watt meter just to get the rpm and thrust. I did not charge the battery or change out the deams so it can probably do better - the RPM reading was 22,700 and the thrust was 13 lbs. I cut the first part out of the video, it ran a couple of minute just before the clip but it was BORING so i cut it.

That's with a full intake ring and 90% fsa outlet. The motor is an HK4035 custom. It has 6 poles and an 8mm shaft. I have a Medusa 200amp Oracle on the way so a better test will follow next week.

Here's a few pics of the setup.

I've heard the Astrofligth Wattmeter wont read higher than 88 amps so you may be pulling more than that.

If you don't mind sharing, where did you find a 4035-800?
I've only found up to 4035-600 so far.
Thanks ,
John

Ed, I've seen it show in the mid 90's, but it also acts like a resistor. When I took it out of the line, the rpm picked up considerably. Later I found that I was really pulling about 120 amps. Clamp meters are the only way to go in that case.

Hi Planecrazee,

I'm quite interested in the results of your test. I've been looking at a scorpion 4035-630 to run in a 4.5inch hoaye fan on 12s. I have on thought that your amp reading may be considerably low.

Using the data that Miljenko gave from his tests on that fan, what I've been looking would give 80ish amps for 3300watts (+/-10%).

A very quick bash through motoguess actually gave over 120amps on 10s lipos using your setup. I love to see the results with a clamp meter.

Scorpion seem pretty cool with doing custom winds. I've exchanged quite a few e-mails with them and have been impressed with their helpfullness.

cheers

Matthew

Yeah, I too am impressed with their motors but when will they release that motor (800kV) to the public? No one has any motors out that they promised months ago. Medusa with their 70 and 80mm 36V2 series and Light Flight with their 80mm. Argh More powa!!!!

I don't have a clamp meter any more, the one I did have was an AC job do they make inductive pickup DC ammeters?
The Oracle has arrived and it is rated for 200 amp burts and 30s @100 amps so it should get the job done. It came with a phase sensor and throttle position sensor along with a temp prob that I'll forego for these test.

The motor is indeed a custom wind that they are considering releasing. In addition to the hot wind the shaft is 8mm that seems to aid the smoothness - just feeling from running it with a 6mm shaft on the 4020-8 and this motor turning considerably faster so far it isounds much soother. The Hk ius the only way to goo too since the bearings are larger and the fan helps with the cooling.

Well I hope that they make that wind. Cause my next plane may be a custom built A-10 and I'm going to use 2 of these or a 120mm BAe Hawk

Too bad Sears stopped selling theirs. I got one when it was on sale for $39 a few years back.

After a short web search I found this. Here's a good price on one that does DCA: 40m/100m +/- 2.0% 400/1000A +/- 1.5%

That looks like the one I just bought Here. As soon as it gets here I'll try again.

Just for kicks I tried it with 10s2p to see what kind of thrust it would deliver, it measured 10 lbs 8 oz.
