Stryker F27-X Build Log

I think this would be the most suitable forum for the build log...seeing she is based on the F27 wing...

I have been playing with the idea for a while to build an X-wing F27...the F27-X, but I did not have the experience or skill I gained over the past year (or the parts and motors, ESC etc)

But , I think I have learned a few things in 2008, including how not to build a plane , in my F4 Phantom build log...so here goes build log #2

Here I started the fibreglassing. In a previous attempt, I used epoxy finish cure resin. On both a F27 wing (still to be finished and she is HEAVY, and the bottom of my F15-P).

This time I decided to try Minwax polycrylic, as somebody had suggested I try it in my F4 Phantom build thread. I had used epoxy for her too and the beast was so heavy she never flew. I did learn a lot though...how not to do things

I applied the cloth in 3 sections on the belly. Left wing, right wing (overlaps for added strength, and nose section.

sorry, I'm being a wise-ass...I am not sure yet about the power system. I was thinking along a few different routes.
1- One Little Screamers Super Park Jet, driving a 6x5.5 or maybe 7x4 prop, Phoenix 35A ESC, TP 3cell 2200mAH lipo
2 Grayson Super Mega Jet, same prop and ESC and battery
3 TWO LSSPJ, installed on stick mounts where the vertical fins used to go !
4 Two ducted fans, Dons wicked extreme 5100kv motors, alfa df's... mmmm, maybe on the F27-X2 waddaya think?

IN any event, there is another matter to consider; the control surfaces. I started thinking roll and pitch only, just like on the F27.

BUT, now I am thinking yaw. So instead of two servos, installed in the bottom wing, and connected to the bottom and top wing elevons....I am thinking of installing 4 HS82MG servos, one in each wing, so that I can setup some kind of V-tail setup so I can knife edge the beast past the flightline filled with mouth-agape stunned old farts...whoahahaha

hehehe...

then I can maybe setup a 'airbrake' mode and have all the elevons...um, no, ruddevons...flick to the outside and she slams on the brakes. Might make a cool trick to come straight down, slowly !

Any input would be appreciated...

you and me both

I finished covering the top with lighter fibreglass, and gave top and bottom a few more coats of polycrylic. So far she is a lot lighter still that the F27 I covered with Epoxy.
Right now she weighs about 1lb, and all the electronics and battery will add about another 1lb, or 1lb 4ounces if I use a big battery

That looks sweet. What motor are you going to power it with? I'm assuming a it's a pusher, too, right?

Fitted the servos tonight, kinda worried about the control surfaces though. I have cut out strips pf Depron to the exact same size as the stock control surfaces, but I think they are going to flex a lot. Any ideas of wat I can use?

I would use wood for the controls.

And use at least a 7 - 8" prop.... a stryker is draggy in its stock form... in whatever this form is it will be way more draggy. and heavy..

i would think a 15- 1700 kv outrunner and the 7 - 8 inch prop with 7 inch pitch should get you moving along nicely.

I am trying to get a rimfire 35-36-1500 to work with this model, and I am having a hard time with it. I need 250W min, but prefer around 300W...I might use the good ole Grayson SMJ that can handle 40A, with a MAS 7x5 prop, Phoenix 60A ESC I get 350W...I sure do want to use this damn motor though, I bought it and I want to use it, not let it lie on the bench gathering dust....

turbored21 thanks, wil lgo look at the LHS for some
