Flasher 450 Helicopter

About the Helicopter
The Flasher 450 is a parts compatible clone of the Align T-Rex 450SE V2. It is constructed of a carbon synthetic fiber frame with CNC head and tail components. This is only my second helicopter, the first being a Blade CP Pro, so you may have to bear with my limited knowledge as I try to pass on my experience with this helicopter!

The Kit
I ordered the ARF version of this helicopter, which included everything you need, minus transmitter and receiver. The helo came kitted out with a generic (I think) gyro, motor, servos and 2200mAh LiPo battery. Everything came packed in a nice aluminum carrying case, which is a great convenience! The connectors were all hooked up except for the servos to the head. All this for $299 shipped!

Setup
Not much to say here. I had to program my DX6i radio to work with the helicopter, most of the information from that came from the radio's manual with a little help from Google and RCGroups. The fiberglass blades were well balanced, and required only a turn and a half or so to adjust tracking.

Impressions
The overall quality of the kit seemed very high. Without having much experience with helicopters this model seemed well put together with good parts. There were a few concerns - the manual said that the motor should have a 12 or 13 tooth pinion, however after the motor seemed to bog down at high pitch I counted the teeth and I had a 14 tooth pinion. A quick phone call and some replacement pinions were put in the mail. Generally, the model flew well (much more stable than my Blade CP Pro!) with only minor trim. The gyro seems to hold heading very well, I'm sure there are better gyros out there you can upgrade to. I don't have much to compare it to, but the Flasher 450 seems very stable and responsive. It has flybar weights which can be positioned or removed to adjust the responsiveness. These came positioned at the outer position for the most stable flight out of the box.

I did have an inflight malfunction however! After flying a dozen or so batteries in the backyard, I took the model to my local flying field to try some level flight. It flew very well, until I got some uncommanded pitching up. I recovered a couple of times, however I was unable to land following a third occurrence and the model piled in. OUCH! A quick investigation revealed that the pitch servo was coming loose - one of the screws was missing and the other was loose. I was ANNOYED! Lesson learned however - checking for vibration while the spooling up is NOT a sufficient pre-flight. From now on I'm wiggling stuff and poking around before I lift off! I'm in the process of replacing all the servos with the trusty HXT-900, and I'll bolt them all down more securely from now on!

I'll put up some new photos when I get it all put back together. Overall, I'm impressed with this model, aside from the servo installation.

Okay!

Bird is flying great. Check my YouTube page shortly for some forward flight action.

My general impression - still very happy with the helo. The "experts" at the field are impressed. It's essentially a T-Rex 450SE V2, the parts are of very good quality and fit together well. Compatibility seems good, although my major repair used CopterX parts.

The only parts that I don't think are of good quality are the servos and gyro (if you buy the electronics included kit). The gyro works okay, but is has a very fussy heading lock mode. You'll likely want to upgrade it. The motor and ESC seem good - ESC programs with a Turnigy programming card.

It seems to be holding together well! I haven't done the whole thing in Loctite yet (yes, I know I'm asking for it). Purchased from SN Hobbies.

Actually - only been flying RC for a few months. Started while I was on a course away from home this summer (learning to fly full-sized military helicopters). I had flown some RC gliders and control line when I was much younger, and I'm just getting back into it. If you want to get better with the helis, get a sim! HeliSimRC is free and works well - I can't recommend it enough. If it weren't for that, the Flasher would be in pieces right now!

Thanks for your comments, good luck with your new helo if you get it!
