Anybody used a Trimersion Headset?

This thing has a built in head tracking system that simulates the left analog stick on video games. It should be really easy to set up buddy box style for pan tilt. It's 640x480 which is pretty good. The only problem is that it is wireless, so there is a good chance that it will interfere with one or more transmitters we already have.

I've actually got one hacked right now. It was dirt cheap. $65 on Amazon NIB! Inside you'll find a pair of Kopin 640x480 optics, a 2.4 GHz receiver and a Gyration head tracker. All hackable. I've removed the 2.4 rx and wired in a 5.8 rx. Next is to tap the tracker and then build in a portable battery source. A steal for the price. There are a few left on Amazon for $65. I'll post pix later.

Is the fov similar to the other kopin goggles? I might grab a set. It would be interesting to mod the video receiver in the headset with a good antenna, and use it directly with your video tx.

The FOV is like the standard Kopin's. I only hacked the Rx because my R/C radio is on 2.4 GHz.

Are you sure it's 640*480 resolution?

In this review I found:

5 Video Quality
The 1-inch 320x240 LCDs are pretty weak. Though adjustments are possible, they don't approach the quality of even standard definition TV.

Here's a quote from a company exec:
Again, uninformed comments from people who haven't tried the unit. The Trimersion is about as good as it will get for VR. If you don't like roller coasters, you probably won't like any head mounted display. One of the issues of trackers was a delay where you would turn your head and the images would pulse as the screen updated causing nausea. The Trimersion uses a gyro with no lag. When connnected to a PC or Mac through the USB connector, it is seen as a mouse and keyboard. The gyro starts moving the cursor on the screen as soon as it's turned on and if you open notepad, you can type characters with the gun. The most common mapping is the movement "WASD" on the front analog joystick on the gun and the default mapping on the programmable triggers is mouse 1 and 2. For console games the analog joysticks can be reversed based on what the game uses for "Look". We increased the rez of the screen to 640 x 480 which is close to the rez of NTSC video 720 x 480, so the image quality isn't bad. The sound amp can pump all the taunts and explosions right into your brain. There is no setup required, no drivers. It is designed to be a simple hardware solution for FPS games. The unit in the photo is also from a while back and the new unit is trimmer and sleeker.

You don't hold the gun up to a screen, it isn't a light gun but a controller and has all the buttons of a standard game pad. Best of all it's wireless. Yes there's a wire that connects the gun to the visor, but that's to put the batteries in the gun to keep the weight off your head. Otherwise you can turn around in the game just like you're there with no cables to get tangled up in.

To my knowledge there has never been a game accessory like this. The closest visor is the Z800 from eMagin and it's $595 and it only works on PCs. It also doesn't have half of the features of this unique device. So before you down it, give it a try. It isn't for everyone but for FPS players, it will surprise you. See it at CES.

Got mine!
Nice fit, almost too immersive.
It'd be nice to lose the plastic sawed-off shotgun when flying FPV.
I tried powering the headset using the red and black wires on the jack
but couldn't get any video signal. I'd prefer to hack it through the jack
since I would like to leave the unit intact for gaming.
Anyone know what connections are required on the helmet jack to make
it work? I don't want to hack the headset directly if I can avoid it.

I just got mine, I plan to hack it for FPV but yeah, I will try to do it thru the existing cable so I can use it for gaming if I want.
Should be useable for movies too, if you are into that.

I agree, nice fit, great headset feel, (Waaay better than my R-Vision 922's) seems very well designed, comfy fit, almost all light blocked out just the way they come, no T-shirt needed , only minor chunks of foam or tape needed to keep ALL light out.
(I hate reflections in the lens)

The ear phones are nice but for FPV I only need one. Having both is a bit claustrophobic.
I'm gonna see if I can make one rotate up so I can still hear stuff around me.

I'll get to hacking these in a few days.... too much other stuff going on right now...

Tempted to pickup another one....

EDIT; Oh yeah, forgot to mention.... NO blue screen, even if video signal is completely gone.

For this price, these are great! If you don't mind doing a little hacking.

Seem to be the same kopin module as the approx $300.00 R-Vision 922 goggles.

I hear that, I checked Amazon and they've gone up.
Maybe they'll drop again after the holidays.
Like I really need another set of goggles!
The earphones really are too deadening.
It should be easy to power the base unit using 5V through the
USB connection.
I really need to lose the stupid plastic shotgun control unit.
I can see me now waving it around at the local schoolyard with that
military looking helmet-goggle thing on my head.
And you can't hear a thing with the earphones on.
There I'll be, swaying to and fro, muttering to myself while figiting
with a sawed-off shotgun.
"Sir, drop your weapon now!" "This is your last warning!" "We will shoot you".
A bad day for me and FPV!

I just picked one up too...They are on ebay for cheap $39.99 + shipping

http://cgi.ebay.com/Trimersion-Wirel...item27add0de2e

FOV is 28 degrees. I am mainly buying these just to see if I will be able to use Video Goggles with my eyes. And for the price I won't have any issues with hacking the crap out of them

Thanks to Galaxiex for the heads up on these!

Can you post some details on your hacks? I'd like to hardwire the video into the headset and ditch the rx on it. thanks!
