????Question????

I'm trying to draw plans for the Peregrine but am having trouble with arcs. Feather tips are not perfect circles and I haven't been able to figure out how to draw elipses to get it to look right except for freehand and I'm horrible at freehand.

Also ..... Is there a cut function so I can cut a drawing into parts rather than drawing each part individually? for example the Snowball. I had to draw the tips and body separately. Is there a way I could have just cut the circle?

Thanks

Lee

try the bomb all plugin(post104) followed by zorro (post35)to cut... ive not tried it but it might work...note zorro will only cut when in the iso(3d) view not parallel, so it can be a bit tricky to line up the cut accurately... info in earlier post

Arcs and curves... find the bezier curves plugin this will let you do curves that are not exact arcs.. post32 zip
do the mirror as well, then you only draw half the model and mirror it to get the whole thing

saving pics from sketchup...I am using vista so in the side bar ive a screen snapper tool that lets me save any section of the screeen as a bmp file.
This is then put in photoshop and saved for web.. then uploaded to RCG in the normal way

I thought you might be interested in the process of getting a RC kite plan from a picture.
heres the thread for nightkites
http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=987191

Using a pic, I put it in photoshop, added a grid, selected the kites area and cropped, then used the transform-perspective option to square up the background tiles to the grid ...pic1 (saved as a bmp)

Now using sketchup I imported the pic as an image. It goes in on the x/y plane and you just drag it to a viewable size.

Using the tapemeasure tool ,I then measured the edge of one tile and assuming they were 12", Ityped the value in and then resized the model to that size.
Next I wanted to check the tiles actually measured square.. so I used the dimensions tool to add sizes across and down the tiles ....pic2..
As can be seen from the dimensions the sizes are out slightly..
Now I select the picture and use the scale tool, pulling the bottom centre down untill the sizes across and down the square are the same ....pic3..

The image in sketchup is now ready to be drawn over
..

Next in sketchup... just use the drawing tools and draw over one half only of the design.
Miiror the half drawn
Remove unwanted picture and add kite dimensions.
lastly check the specs for the kite and adjust the size to suit using the tape measure tool on the span....
Not a bad job, when resized it was only a fraction of inches out

Pretty cool contest Mark. You got some pretty intricate designs too. I have been wondering about designing some Rube Goldberg devices myself to pass the time. This was a pretty good idea.

You do of coarse realize the some what obvious irony of trapping a mouse in a box made of foam.

Hi. I need help. I imported a freeflight plan into Google Sketchup. I resized it. Then when I went to print preview I got this. I clicked a few things like I knew what I was doing. Apparently not! The first time I did it it worked. Help!!!!!!

Hi Lee,
You are doing really good after only a couple weeks working with sketchup.

One question, are these two versions of the Capricorn?

The 3D drawing show the wing as both anhedral and dihedral,
while the front vies shows only dihedral.

Never mind, I just realized that one is the Capricorn and the other is the snowball.

I've built it with a flat center with the same angle on the tips as the Snowball before and it flies like the Snowball except even more stable.

Thanks Lee,
Do you need an additional sponson on the back if you fly either of these off of water?

Sorry, I realize that I got way off the thread with these questions.
I should find the appropriate threads.
