Another Chris Craft Triple Cockpit Barrel Back
Here's another build thread about the Dumas Chris Craft Triple Cockpit Barrel Back. I'll get some pictures up in a couple of days. So far I have labeled all of the laser-cut sheets. The build will be very slow for multiple reasons so bear with me. One of the reasons is that I'm only 12 years old and still in school. Another reason is that I'm still really a newbie at this (I've built 1 rc model before, the Carol Moran). Because of both of these reasons I'm going to be needing a lot of help from all the experts here. I'll take any tips I can get! Now I've got to go get started building so I can get Kmot his pictures before too long.

I have a question already. What type of glue do you reccomend using to glue the support blocks onto the frames?

Welcome trawlerlover,
Use hot glue to glue the frames to the building board. Easy to remove when you're ready to flip it over. Glue...CA with a kicker works well for framing. It's way faster than epoxy. |

Titebond lll works well too and it's way cheaper than epoxy or CA glue.It's also waterproof. Pete

Ok thanks for the suggestions, but I think I'm going to pin the boat to the building board not hot glue it.

Nope! Pins arn't tough enough. Use the glue so the frames can' tcome lose on you while your planking. If the frames move even a little bit your hull could come out crooked. Not worth the chance with all that work to be done. Use the glue and you'll be happy that you did. Pete

Ok, thanks for the tip, I just didn't want to use hot glue because I have no experience and don't want any trouble removing hull. Tomorrow I'll go get some Titebond and begin working on the boat. By the way what's the dry time for Titebond? And thanks for the really quick reply (before I made any mistakes
)

Can I use wood glue then epoxy over the entire insde of the boat after the sub-planking instead of using Titebond?

TiteBond is the wood glue to use I think. By all means coat the inside with epoxy and do it throughly. Mix the epoxy and thin it some-maybe about 25%.then you can paint it on with a brush. Just mix a small amount at a time till you know how far you can go with one batch. After a couple of batches you'l be comfortable with the mixing and it should go very well for you.
Actually any wood glue will do for building these wood models. The thing with Titebond is that it's waterproof where other "white" glues are not. I've used it on several large models and it's been fine so far. One other thing. After you apply the first layer of planks you may have some open seams in the hull. I had plenty of them. Put some masking tape over the hull ( I just did the whole thing) and then do the epoxy inside. The tape will keep the epoxy from dribbeling through any open seams and running down the sides of the hull. It'll save you all the time to sand off the dribbles after the epoxy sets up. Pete |

Another question, the instructions say I need two building boards. Why do I need two? Also, I don't have enough room for two 48 inch building boards, can I get away with just one?

If you don't have the room as I don't have the room then you have to go with one. Right??? I have one of the balsa building boards from Guillows and it's great. It's 48" long and just fits on my building table with a few inches on either end to spare. Don't know why they would want you to have two building boards but I'm sure you can go with one with no problems. Pete

When it talks about 2 building boards I think they want you to use a double layer. One on top of the other as I recall.

I don't know If I'm going to go with the balsa building board but I think all I need is one board. I also looked at the pictures again and it looks like one piece of tile (maybe) goes on top of a piece of wood. I'm just going to use a piece of wood. I'll get some pictures uploaded as soon as I get the frames glued in place.
