Best motor setup for Aspire glider

I just finished my Aspire EP glider, I was wondering what setups everyone was using on them as the stock motor probably wont fly it too well as the stock ones never do.

Hi Cue; Check back a week or so. Marcus just got one up. I think he put a Magnetic Mayhem in his. Direct drive. He gave his impressions and some pictures also.

OK, I was thinking about trying that combo but wasnt sure if the 800ar's would handle the amps. I will probably try it tomorrow.

Cue, with the MM direct with stock prop and 8x800AR your Aspire will be very light. The 800AR seem to be handling 28 amps just fine, they just get a little warm. The cooling slot in the canopy helps.

If your 800AR are in a rectangular shape like mine (bundle) then you need to remove the battery tray so the pack can go all the way back. I have some pics that show how to make the pack easily removable like this without removing the wing, you basically line the sides with foam so the pack is snug, and then use a foam block with velcro to squeeze the front of the pack and hold it in place.

If you don't care about removing the wing then they'll fit ok as is.

I'll try to update my website to show this in the next couple of days.

The downside to the 800AR is you really only get about 1.5 mins climb (with reserve left over). These packs can charge so quickly that it doesn't matter if you have a few. The Aspire will really slow down at this weight, but does not handle much wind.

That's right, unfortunately. Plus any geabox will add 2 more ounces. I know, maybe I'm taking the weight thing too seriously for this big plane. I like the MM Direct solution because it only costs $20 and you can even use the kit prop. It works pretty well for direct drive. With a geared system like DrE suggests you will gain about 1/3 more climb in this situation.

Well the only Mag meyham motor I had was a reverse one, but in my box I found a green car motor labled Lightspeed in a silver label so I thought I would give it a shot.
Using the stock prop and a 8 cell pack of 800ar's I got only 20 amps and 192 watts on a fresh pack. I will hopefully get to try this out tomorrow if the wind dies down.
Anyone know anything about the lightspeed motors? I semms I could probably use a bigger prop with it. It came out at 41 oz also.

The easiest upgrade is to use a graupner s600 inline planetary gb 8x800 and a 12x8 prop should do the job

OK, I would like to see the pics.
Also how much does that gearbox cost? every inline one I have seen costs at least $50.

Well I flew it today, the results were kinda dissapointing. First it needed about 1/8 inch of right rudder just to fly straight, what couls cause that?
Then the lightspeed motor and 8 cells of 800ar's did not want to climb too well, the sub-c 1700's I tried climbed a lot better but still it would take forever to get to 500 feet like horizon states it will do on the stock motor. Alos the prop would not fold back at all and kept windmilling.

So where can I get a inline gearbox? and whats one of the best ones for it?

Perhaps one wing is heavier than the other? Maybe some balancing of the wings would help...

The Dymond 3:1 inline works nicely.

I never thought about the wing weighing different, I checked and sure enough the left wing was heavier, it took a little more than half an ounce to balance it (quick test)

Yes you can get Dymonds Max05 motor and the 3:1 Gearbox for $59.99 if I remember correctly. Ive been using it with a 14x9.5 prop in a 70+ oz 100in glider. Its probably borderline as far as long term reliability the way im running it but I think in a 2 meter glider with a Graupner 12x10 it would be a pretty nice setup.

Well after looking at it sitting in the corner for a while, I installed a cermark cobalt 05 motor with a sonic tronics 10x6 prop. It should climb well now on 8 cells

Neat, how well does that Dymond gearbox hold up? How many cells/amps are you putting through it? My brother just bought an Aspire to learn on. The stock setup burned up within the 1st 20 flights or so on 7-1900 and the stock prop. We tried a 6/1 Como Drill GB w/Sp600 and it tore up the GB only pulling 22 amps. We're looking for a sturdy and inline replacment with at least 3/1 ratio.
