Stika SCP-85 Vinyl Cutter

Anyone have experience with this, or any other cutter? Do they work well, how do you get multiple colors?

regards

Imagine not asking the ISR??? We have the Stika Plus (STX-8). This cutter works well and will cut up to 9" letters or images and up to 39" long. Multiple colors are done by cutting the same image on different colored vinyl and the combining the images after they are cut. You peal out the color from one sheet and add it into the other. It's a real pain in the butt and single color stickers are far better to work with. You can get a cutter that has an inkjet head built in, if you have the bucks. There is also a vinyl you can run through your inkjet printer and then you put that printed image into the Stika machine and it cuts around the image. I have some of this stuff but have not tried it yet. They are cool machines to have but they do have some drawbacks.

They're expensive
Buying all the colors is expensive
Very small letters and images are nearly impossible to cut. (under 1/4")
Weeding the cut stickers is a royal pain in the butt and incredibly time consuming.

You can buy a awful lot of stickers for the cost of a Stika set-up. The ISR spent about $900 for the cutter, a few rolls of vinyl and transfer tape.

Vinyl Cutting...

Brian,

Thanks for the info... You ISR guys have everything !! Do you use the cutter often?

It sounds like a lot of work, which might actually be a pain compared to making decals.

I thought it sounded interesting, but I now understand the downfalls. Thanks for the message.

We don't use the cutter all that much but it is nice to have when you need it. We don't use it much for decals except for the single color ones. German crosses, Japanese meatballs and Russian stars. British and US are too much of a pain and its just way easier to buy the Major Decals 1/12 scale sets. They are a bit pricey but you can't beat them for convenience. Just cut and stick. Hobby People usually stocks the decal sets.

We use the cutter for our club banners, window stickers and that type of stuff more than we use it for our airplane decals. It is great for numbering and lettering for planes. If you have a few hundered bucks in burning a hole in your pocket they are nice to have. If your are thinking of making sticker sets for the kits you might want to re-think. Cutting and weeding decal sets takes forever.

If your looking to stock decals for the CS foamies you might want to get the Major Decals sets or have your own made. I think dealer cost is about $6.50 on the Major decals sets (retail about $9).

TFLG,

What type of vinyl are you using? Type, brand, mil, etc. I'm looking for a vinyl that will work well with large RC gas planes, cars, and boats.

Thanks,
Jim
