Who's up for an Ozzy DS thread and some friendly interstate rivalry. I know of two radar guns being used around the Sydney area, and have it on good authority that there will be two in use in Vic next week. Pretty sure the Queenslanders are doing it as well.

After a resounding YES we are underway.

Guidelines for a valid reading:
1. Must be recorded and witnessed on a radar gun.
2. Reading must be made on or after the 3rd circuit (prevents drop in speeds being used)
3. No false readings (ie gun reads 100mph for 3 laps then on fourth reads 150mph is probably an error in reading)
4. Speeds to be recorded in MPH for consistency with rest of world

Perhaps a similar format to what the rest of the world is using. That way our speeds will be recoqnized. Plane, date, location, pilot, witness.

I think it is also suggested that the speed is at least on the third circuit so that speeds obtained from a high dive are not included. I would also suggest that consistent readings similar to the top speed are observed. Sometimes the guns show up a speed that is way higher than anything acheived in previous circuits and I dont think you can guarantee the reading is correct. Speeds have to be recorded on a radar gun to be consistent with what everyone is doing.......too many people have guessed in the past and I think some of those guesses were probably way off. When you have a gun and see your actually speeds you get much better at guessing though.

I doubt anyone will catch Eric for a long time. You need the combination of pilot, hill, plane and wind. We definitely have enough guys trying now and getting better and better. Hills really need to prove they can produce the high speeds. I think there are still not many planes in Australia able to consistently handle 200mph. There are only 4 Opus MC3 that I know of, lots of single carbon birds and only a few of those in the states have gone over 200mph. Current Bird top speed was a double carbon version. To my knowledge the 2m Blades in Australia are not the same versions that have managed over 200mph with the lighter versions of these models self destructing at lower speeds. Wind.....well BOM often show good winds on the way but we all know how reliable they are.

I think the top recorded pilots at this stage will welcome a challenge. Eric way out in front. I think Sean is in second place and some Andrew bloke in third.

Perhaps when Eric the aussie DS god chimes in we can sort it out.

Despite the high target set by Eric, there is still plenty of achievements to be had in other categories, particularly the 48" and 60" categories. I also reckon that any estimate done without a radar is a 'no reading' and cannot be claimed.

We should sort out a method for claiming speeds at 'secret' or 'off limits' sites that both has credibility, but at the same time preserves the anonymity of the site. I have access to a site on private property where I am certain that the owner does not want lots of people flying, but that has good potential for early records. How do we identify the site without giving away it's location? Something I'm sure we'll sort out soon.

There are new sites being found all the time - I'm going to fly at a new coastal site this weekend that has massive potential - I'm sure that once the competition starts, it will bring a lot more suitable locations out of the (google earth) shadows.

Yeah I'm all for it. I just visited www.rcspeeds.com to see how many Aussie speeds were registed there and I could only find 3, Eric's, Andrew's and mine. I know there must be more. I've only flown in front of a gun once, and I found it extremely useful to find the grove. I just wish the wind would blow strong enough at the right site while someone is there with a gun. I've flown faster at Long Reef with the Blade than 108, I just don't know how fast? ...as there was no gun or witnesses!

I've been to the Byron Bay site just once, and I can tell you Eric must be a very guttsy guy to fly there as I would not be happy chucking off my mouldie due to the poor landing and visbilty at the site. I'd love to see Eric fly just to see how he does it!

I'd really like to try more local sites (within a days drive of Sydney) to get a feel for what different sites offer. Dobroyd and Mt Annan are great for learning and are fairly forgiving, but Long Reef I think has greater speed potential but can be extremely unforgiving. Long Reef, Dobroyd and Byron Bay also suffer from being way too popular for tourist sight seeing.

News is from Ezza that he has just bought himself a Kinetic 60". I think that he figured that his 183mph Reaper 60" Aus record and Foam record was under threat and wants to post some big speeds.

I am sure everyone will be honest but I do think the start of your thread has to list the guidelines for what and how to record so that all speeds can be equally compared. Along the lines of what I wrote before. Speed from a dive not valid and must be at least the third lap in the circuit. Measured with a radar gun and not gps or other device. Similar speeds must be observed during the flight so that you can be sure its not a false reading. List the date, pilot, plane, speed, location (or general area if secret spot), witness.

Have a look through the first few posts in the DS forums and rc speeds. They do the lists by speed, pilot and plane. Think this is nice as it will keep track of everyones PB, list the top speeds and also which planes are performing the best in each class. This makes 3 lists at least but not too hard to keep up to date.

As for the classes, well mouldies and foamies would have to be seperate and would you class a vac bagged core as a foamy?

Eric and I have other speeds with other planes and there are a few recorded speeds I know of not listed on that site. Eric has 181mph with a reaper, Alkoo has 149mph with his own design, I have 155 with a bird and 137 with a Nemesis.

I look forward to seeing new pb's/records posted. It is a real buzz when you move your speed up another level. Should be some great stories coming up with all the new ds junkies.

I know it isn't always possible but if someone is going fast and there is a video camera around, use it. Love to see planes being flown fast, and also a great way to verify speed.

Also look forward to new spots being discovered, which is half challenge here in Australia. I think Roger is onto a couple of beauties with Johanna and Hotham, both look world class, atleast from video and photos.

As Roger pointed out we need to be careful with the private sites being named or over abused. This happened to a really good spot in Qld and it was shut down. Best to go with whoever has a good relationship with the landowner.

I think the updateable list with simple guidlines at the top is the way to go.
