How to chose giant scale engine ?

I am new to giant scale. What are the criterions for chosing a 40 cc
engine for my project?. I would like to use these criterions to
compare available engines.

*Power to weight ratio
*Prop size and RPM capability to match the plane you want to build
*User friendliness
*Availability of parts
*Manufacturer's reputation
*Other modeler's opinions

Re: How to chose giant scale engine ?

it somewhat depends on your application...heavier motors such as the zenoah,
quadra, fuji, etc, are fine for big cubs and non performance aircraft, and they
are more or less the same - converted industrial motors that will frun for
years without much more than a new plug. for higher performance aerobatic
airplanes, the ZDZ or 3W ignition motors are lighter, stronger, and a wole lot
friendlier to run. Too bad DA doesn't made anything smaller than a 50...

No matter how much thought.....
No matter how much advice.....
No matter how much money....

You will purchase the wrong engine for your aircraft. It will be adaquite
but just not the right engine. You will buy a second engine and it will be
better but still not the perfect engine. The third engine will be perfect,
however, by that time the airframe will probably be too old and you'll need
a new plane. Then the selection process will begin again!

I was going to say something similar along those lines, No matter what
engine you buy someone else will tell you it's the wrong engine.

Re: How to chose giant scale engine ?

Is the Fuji really that bad ?? The specs seem impressive for the power to
weight ratio. I ask as I was thinking of getting one for an aerobatic
plane.

Thanks

Re: How to chose giant scale engine ?

For aerobatics, It's not the question of good engine or bad engine, but more
a question of wing loading and final power to weight ratio in the plane.
A less powerfull, light engine may do much better in aerobatics because of
the lighter total weight and lower wing loading.
Some other factors like prop size enter the picture as well, but in general,
adding engine weight up front not necessarily improves aerobatic
capabilities, even if vertical stamina is improved after the required
beef-up. A heavy plane will not corner well, it will gain too much speed in
downward flight, it will take too long to stop rotating in speed stalls, the
heavy prop will add too much gyroscopic action that will spoilr otherwise
clean gyrations, etc etc.
A highly aerobatic plane is a very delicate balance of a lot of items.
