Help!
I need some advice on lighting up my AA saucer

Hi all,

I recently purchased an AlienAir Flying Saucer, http://www.hammacher.com/publish/75493.asp. And I had an idea to take the existing body off and making a more "ufo" looking body for it. But I would like to add a string of led's around the outside that would chase each other in a circle.

How would I be able to do something like this? The weight would have to be kept at a minimum cause it only weighs in at about 42g stock.

Thanks for any help you can provide

I'm no Albert Frankenstein, but I may be able to help a little with a free LED chaser circuit. Or you can just buy a chaser circuit kit from an electronics hobby shop...the geeks working there will know what you're after.

Weight is going to be a real problem, you could try not using a circuit board in your circuit, and just solder the components directly to each other (be careful not to over heat them - use heat sinks when soldering).
Whatever you do is however going to present a balance issue when you fit this chaser circuit to your UFO. Maybe before you buy anything, you could estimate the weight of the components, wires and solder needed...then see if your UFO can carry the weight.

Good luck, it sounds like an interesting project...however it turns out I'm sure you'll learn heaps.

Edit : Oh and by the way, the 555 timer in the circuit can be used with an input voltage of anywhere from + 4.5Vdc to + 15 Vdc.

And the CD4017B chip will work from +3Vdc to +18Vdc.

A different input voltage may alter the chaser speed, but that might end up being a good thing.

As an afterthought, you could go to a dollar shop and buy a kids toy with a chaser circuit in it, that way all the engineering has already been done for you, and you wont have to buy any components or do much soldering.
Just a thought.
