Dang...just smoked my KX-171

Soldering after 24 hours of airline travel is not a good idea.

I just accidentally reversed the polarity on my KX-171 and smoked it.

Still has 'some' image but it is very crazy looking.

I can sympathize.
I fried a 1 watt xmtr recently because the
JST plug I used had reversed polarity. (Black +, Red Gnd)

Probably no way to fix the little guy. Anyone think of some use for it?

Copper, which I'm sure the camera has inside of it, has adverse affects on plants and animals inside the tank. I was going to use a fish tank for water cooling. That was up until I read what copper (aka CPU heat sink) does to the water.

Sorry to hear that - gone through two cameras myself. If you're interested and have the time, you could open it up and see what got damaged for component replacement. I over-volted my 191 which popped and smoked it. Wasn't able to track down the fried component(s).

Alternatively if you're going to trash it you could mail it to someone on the board here who would be interested in it.

I fried a kx171 with reverse polarity also...

It blew a surface mount capacitor on the board.
I was able to get an exact replacement and solder it in, but the camera was never the same after that....
Finally it just quit working.

Anci3nt,

I like your idea...if someone on here would be interested in a project I'll ship it out.

Probably hang onto the lens and power cord for the replacement I have to buy...but if anyone wants the 'guts' let me know.

Like I said...it still has a picture...in fact...up very close the picture is usable. When you look at something 'far' away (across the room) it is very funky looking indeed. Not sure how to even describe it.

My soldering skills are not up to the task of any kind of attempted repair that's for sure.

strange - when i soldered everything together in my video setup for the first time (kx131, 500mwatt 900mhz video tx and standard 900mhz video rx all from vova aka rangevideo.com) and powered it all with the pin and the hole connectors which i also bought from vova nothing worked and as i found out later everything was reverse polarized! But only the video tx died, the camera and rx worked fine after i got a new tx from vova, but the strange thins is that at first my new tx and my old rx worked together fine on some frequancy (i dont remember which exactly) but than when i changed frequancy to reduce interference with my 2.4 Ghz radio i found out that the only combination on wich the reciever saw the video signal was when the tx was on ch4 and the rx was on ch3 (i dont remember exactly and i'm to lazy to go check the exact channels right now). But the camera worked ok after that. But i was not satisfied with the quality of the video it got and ordered a kx151

That is probably what saved some of your equipment. If EVERYTHING was reverse polarized, it probably loaded down the voltage at the equipment, almost like a short, to the point where nothing was getting full reverse voltage, but a much lower reverse voltage, which some things could survive.
