On to the next clinic topic: Hovering

Hovering is definitely one of the most impressive 3D maneuver, and one that people naturally associate with 3D. It's also one that is met with disdain when we abuse it and hover DOD on the tarmac, preventing other airplanes from landing, taking off, or just flying in general.

I prefer to think of a hover as a VERY HIGH ALPHA HARRIER, whether they're upright, inverted, or KE. As long as there's a little bit of wind, the plane will be in a slight harrier attitude. When it's perfectly upright and going with the wind, that's usually when the plane start to torque roll (which is another topic for another clinic ).

Again, great video.

I noticed how much input that plane needs to keep it in a hover. I little trick I find that makes hovering a bit smoother, and more solid is to slow down on the inputs, and it makes the plane less sensitive, and keeps it rock solid in a hover. Also, instead of constantly "pumping" the throttle, find the "sweet spot", where minimal throttle inputs are needed to keep it level, say a few clicks up/down. It's just a personal trick I find that makes hovering a breeze, and makes it look rock solid

Well, if it weren't blowing 10-15 mph, then that would be the case right? .

I have found out how to make my hovering look really pro, even in the winds. Keep the inputs soft

Now just to work on those torque rolls

And I wonder when they will sticky these clinics to the top of the page....

Xpress, you can always do your own hover video, that's really the only way you're going to teach anyone your techniques. Describing them in print just isn't going to get it across.

Yeah, I know. Problem being here is that I only have one camera, that isn't all that high def., and I have no way of showing what I'm doing on the sticks

Great Job again Josh!!

I'm sure a lot more time goes into these videos that everyone realizes, and it's a great to have something that everyone can use to help with the learning curve.

I know the 3D section already has a 3D training video sticky, but I'm all up for a BoneDoc 3D Training Sticky!!

Your vids are easily some of the best training vids I've seen yet.

XPress - Just show the plane, that would help a lot. I presume you have a balsa plane you can shoot? Doesn't matter too much which one.

I have always wondered how to do this. I have attempted to do this at altitude but I just seem to fall off on or a wing or actually flipped it over. I do love seeing the plane and the controls being worked in these videos. Just one question. Are you saying it is easier to do this with a bigger plane or with a smaller one? If so why?

Coop. Bigger planes are easier. They carry more mass, and doesn't get blown away nearly as much as smaller planes
