Gnome Glider

Anyone know who made the Gnome, a glider of about 32" span that was around in the early 50s?

I built one in about 1953 and had it fly away from a field in Halton near Leeds. It was really quite a thrill, as the day was just about dead calm. The model descended to about 30 feet and the then started going up. I followed it, walking quite slowly for perhaps 20 min. until it disappeared into the clouds.

I got it back some months later, much the worse for wear. It had landed on the roof of the Leeds railway shops. I built another and flew it for several months.

Anyway, I thought it might be interesting to build one again but see virtually no references.

Short kits are a very expensive way of saving oneself an hour of work.

Thanks. That's the one.

Also in the ad is the Martin, with which I spent many happy hours in the field in front of our house. I discovered that if you propped up the nose a bit on anything handy (usually a dry cow pat) you could tow it off the ground unassisted. This was important for an only child growing up on a farm.

Anyone have a plan for the Gnome and/or Martin?

Sorry, not in my files as yet. I'll check around.

I built two Gnomes and a Martin as raffle prizes at a public exhibition that the Enfield Club organised in the '50s but never flew them, of course, other than hand glides to get a smooth descent. The Martin was first prize - red and white tissue . Gnomes 2nd and 3rd - both white with fuselages back Aerolac'd

Phil Smith has the gnome in his plan list at 2.50 plus postage- my list slightly out of date on prices. he covers most if not all of early keil kraft, veron and mercury and also some others. he also usually includes copies of ribs formers etc and build instructions.

his list cost a 1 when I bought it a few years ago.
his tel no is 01202 433 431

Thank you. I'll write him a letter -- on paper (long time since I did that).

I dont think Phil will mind a phone call as long as you allow for time differences - I know he gets lots of orders from abroad - but he doesnt do credit cards as he runs the plan service more as a service to modellers and not as a business - he is well past normal retirement age and last time I saw him - still active in modelling.

HMS daedalus is a Naval shore base about 30 miles from me - any connection ?

Afraid not. Though I did used to visit the Portsmouth area when my aunt was living in Havant.

Daedalus was the old guy who flew sensibly while wild son Icarus lost his feathers from flying too high. I liked the idea that age and cunning might have some advantages. Or that a sensible approach to flying might pay off.

Presumably the latter sentiment may have influenced the choice of name for HMS Daedalus, the home of naval aviation in 1917.

Thanks for the info about Phil. I haven't been in touch yet but will do so.
