Duratrax Evader EXB RTR Buggy Review
Introduction
The Evader EXB is the latest addition to the Duratrax line of Ready-to-Run electric cars. Brother to the Evader EXT off road truck, this 1/10 scale buggy packs a lot of features into one box. Everything is included except the batteries, so you'll be on...er.... OFF the road in no time.
Kit Contents
Opening the box, I quickly got the picture of what ready-to-run means. All of the major assembly was complete, and about all that was left for me to do was apply the decals, put in the batteries, check the adjustment on the clutch and go race. About the hardest part of the assembly was stuffing the antenna wire into the tube.
Here is what comes with the Evader EXB:
Features
Included with the Evader EXB is a Sprint 2 ESC with reverse. This ESC features 4 beefy MOSFETs for forward gear and two for reverse. An anodized heat sink helps to keep the unit cool and a pair of LEDs show the ESC status and help with setup. After 15 minutes of hard driving, the Sprint 2 comes back pretty warm, but it has held up well throughout testing. While it is rated at 128A, the only time the ESC will see this much current (for a short time) is during hard acceleration where the motor is essentially stalled. This unit is assembled nicely and the soldering is well done. I did not see any solder balls or metal particles upon closer inspection. Good quality, heavy gauge wire is used. A separate ON/OFF switch enables the BEC.
Assembly
The assembly is straight forward and well spelled out in the manual. I did take time to set the slip in the clutch and double check the mesh of the main drive gear and motor pinion. The mesh of the gears on my Evader was a little loose, and I followed the manual to tighten it up. The included 4-way hex wrench fits all of the Evader's nuts, but I also needed an Allen wrench (motor bolts), a Philips screw driver (gear cover and suspension mounts), and some needle nose pliers (body and battery clip removal) to work on the Evader. I put a slight bend in the body and battery clips so I could get a hold of them easier without tools. With the decals in place and the battery charged, it was ready to roll.
Driving
The first few packs we discharged with the Evader were on the streets in front of our house. On dry pavement, the Evader gets up and goes, and the slipper clutch does a good job of protecting the gears. I would estimate the top speed at 30mph. The wheel track and low C.G. make it almost impossible to flip the Evader (unless it is tripped by something) on pavement. This make power slides a lot of fun. The Evader has no problem powering through grass and my wife's rock garden (it must have been the dog who crushed your flowers, dear). At slow speeds the steering is tight and precise. The turning radius is about 2 feet so you can get in and out of tight places with ease. One weak spot is the reverse speed: The ESC limits the reverse speed quite low, and it does not have enough power to back out of some obstacles (e.g. grass, loose dirt). played with setting the throttle trim as close as possible to going into reverse, and this seemed to give a bit more power in reverse.
At higher speeds there is quite a bit of under-steer, but it is predictable and smooth. This is mostly due to the ribbed front wheels not having much side grip on pavement. Keep in mind that the Evader is not designed for on-road driving, and pavement will wear down the tires.
Next, my son Tim and I headed for a local construction site. With acres of dirt in front of us, we proceeded to put the Evader through its paces. The Evader launches straight on loose sand and gravel. The rear end will swing out if pushed too hard, but a short blip off the throttle will settle it back down. Driving on sand takes more finesse than on dry pavement. If you keep the throttle hammered, you'll be spinning your wheels all day (which can be fun too).
On rough terrain it is fun to watch the suspension work. The wheels bob up and down, but the chassis cruises along nice and smooth. Unless you run into something while sliding sideways, the wide track and low C.G. of the Evader makes it very difficult to flip. Small jumps are a lot of fun, and the suspension does a good job of taking this punishment. The chassis features over 22 "Stress-Tech tm" parts. All of the parts (identified in the parts list) are warranted for 12 months. Just send in the broken part and Hobbico will send you a replacement for free.
Maintenance
After a hard day's driving, there is not much to take care with the Evader. The differential is sealed and maintenance free. I usually rinse off the chassis to get rid of dirt and dust. Don't forget to check the mesh of the pinion and spur gear. The spur gear is one of the few pieces of plastic in the drive train, and it can easily get chewed up by the metal pinion if the mesh is too loose. I would recommend using some thread locker when setting the mesh.
Conclusion
The Evader EXB is a great way to get into off-road racing. Right out of the box it is a good performer. All of the components are of good quality and are up to the task for off-road racing. We've had a great time playing at the local construction sites. With all of the abuse we've put it through, it has been suprisingly easy to take care of. The "Stress-Tech" Guarantee ensures your Evader is going to last. As your driving skills improve, Duratrax offers a complete line of hop-ups to satisfy your need for speed.

If you mean the difference between the EXB and EXT, I think it is mostly the stock wheels and body. I have not taken a close look at the EXT.

The suspension is also slightly different, the EXT's is longer.

Hi Chris,
The reverse switch for the throttle should correct the issue. If yo say it is in the right position, the switch may have gone bad, so you might try flipping it back and forth a couple of times to clean the contacts. -Jim |

One suggestion related to review videos. We want to see the speed to, so run the car. Going in little circles is nice to see to don't get me wrong but I hate the 'go for a second or two and stop' stuff.
I think the only difference between the BX version and this is that the BX has ball bearings and a Futaba made radio on 72mhz. All the other features look the same. If you are just bashing I don't see a need for the more expensive version. |

Just got an EXB - don't know anything about RC vehicles! I was playing with the throttle trim but don't know what it should be set to? Also, the buggy doesn't seem to want to move anymore - I think it still has some battery power. Thanks!

The throttle trim should be set so the ESC is not on when you let go of the trigger. Listen for a faint hum from the motor/esc and adjust the trim until it stops.
A charge only lasts about 15-20 minutes. What were you doing before it stopped moving? -Jim |

Thanks Jim. Enjoyed the review of the car too. I recharged the battery and adjusted the throttle trim and the car goes forward fine but now has no reverse at all? When I move the throttle reverse to the other position, the car goes forward by itself at high speed. And is the ESC supposed to have a loud whine whenever the car is moving? Thanks, Dave.

Evader EXT
I have an Evader EXT and I have a problem with the motor. When I try to get it to move I get a hum but nothing is happening. I have tried changing the batteries in the hand held and I have tested the battery and all is fully charged. It will steer but not move. Any suggestions? Do I have to take it back to the shop or is there something I can do to test the motor or the channels? Thanks for your help. I really like the car but it is hard to play with in this condition.
