DAW Extra - Building Tips?

I'm starting this plane now. Any building tips? How about making the LG mount stronger, I've read that this is a weak point in the design.

Thanks.

Bummer, I'm down to 810 posts. I'm off about 125 posts...

I was hoping to get to the meg mark soon.

Hey Herb, what happened to the pic of your Extra? The link is gone on all posts containing it...

Build it stock and light - especially the empennage. I built mine with 2 CS-21s for R/E, 2 CS-10s in the wing, and a 555rx with the case removed. Of all the prop combinations I tried, those silly little Gunther props gave the best overall flight performance.

The gear is the weakest link, but it is easily repairable with a bit of hot glue. I'd run two 1/2" wide strips of strapping tape down the fuse sides from about 2" before the L/E to 2" behind the L/E. After installing the rx and wiring, there's not a lot of foam left in that area.

It's a fun little plane. Hope you enjoy it.

Pete

Here's progress so far:

Couple of questions,
1) What kind of glue did you use to attached the LG mount to the foam with? I think I'll also use strapping tape wrapping around the fuse since this is supposed to be a weak point.
2) Did you glue the foam "plug" over the rx or leave it removable? The instructions suggest to leave it snug but doesn't say to make it removable.

Looking good Sal,

I honestly don't know if I tried a MAS 5.5x4.5, but I tried every small prop that I could find locally - APC 4.75x4.75 through Graupner 6.5x4.

1) I've used hot glue and epoxy (I've built two of these babies) and it didn't seem to matter much. Go with the hot glue - it's quicker.
2) I didn't put a plug over the rx, but not to make it removable. There's not a lot of foam up there, and I wanted to hog out as little as possible.

Looks like you'll have it flying soon.

Thanks Pete.

I tried a test of Pro-Bond vs. hot glue. The Pro-Bond seems to bend a little more when I tried to break off the test piece (on a scrap piece of EPP). I think maybe I'll try that.

Good idea about pulling out less foam for the rx. Too late for me, I already cut mine. I may try to shore it up a bit before I cover it up. I also have the Staudacher so I could build that one off the experience of this one.

Pete,

I'm covering now, probably won't be ready to fly til next weekend.

One question, did you rog yours? And if so how'd it do (length before takeoff)?

Thanks.

Build it like Dave Sanders says and it will fly like a charm! But DON'T CUT OR FOLD THE ANTENNA.

<img src="http://aeneas.ps.uci.edu/edf/extra/extra_300_1.jpg" width=400 height=276>

The prop in the picture is a Robbe 6x3.5 (?) folder. A graupner cam 5x5 is fine too, it will be faster. The battery box is a bit flimsy.

Looking good Sal. What did you decide about strengthening up the landing gear ?

These planes aer supposed to be real sensitive, being as short coupled as they are. Use exponential or dual rates.

Let us know how she flies.

Kevin,

Thanks. I used Pro-Bond to glue the gear plywood to the fuse. I then sprayed the fuse with 3M 77 (as you would normally do) and then wrapped 3/4" strapping tape over the ply and around the fuse. If this breaks up it will tear the fuse apart first! I don't plan on using gear much anyway since I fly mainly on grass, but I do want to try it.

I've heard lots about being very responsive and using d/r & exp. I'll definately dial it in. Any recommendations on actual settings? (Herb???) How about cg also, any problems there???

It's coming along fine. I may finish the covering today or tomorrow, maybe I post some updated pics. Shooting for this coming weekend for the maiden...

Extra 300 gear mounting

Gents:

While my Extra is still NIB I have had some success with EPP and landing gear mounts..

I affix with Probond adn then dowel with toothpicks at various angles.. This method dramatically increases the surface area anchoring the legs to the fuse.

I am most interested in cg, throws for the first flight and what the best motor choice might be....

I actually used the glues he recommended in his instructions/web pages and it worked very well. Goo is more flexible than probond (which I love but is more a light epoxy replacement) and I would still prefer it. It also does not foam.

Dave has the world's largest abridged glue encyclopedia on his web page somewhere,

http://davesaircraftworks.com/

My DAW extra was bit sensitive on the elevator, so the first flight was interesting... Otherwise the recommended throws & cg are just fine. The LG is good for absorbing hard landing eg when batt runs out. The battery box & screw mount needs some strengthening, my batt would occasionally fall out on landing (I have a rough field).

BTW it is definitely NOT underpowered.
