What sort of cam did you use?? Looks like flycam one footage.. probably wrong..

Thanks for the vid.. Awesome place to fly too!!
I'm putting in some retracts in my bird... should be a bit quicker too....

That was a cool vid, I was the guy running at the end... Just a little improv.
So you're putting in retracts? Please send pics or vids.

Sorry for the slow reply......
Been looking at doing retracts into this little bird for a while...
I have these (For a while actually)
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s..._gear_set.html
They are smaller than even I thought...
But with all the super small servoless retracts coming out I decided to buy these
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...teerable_.html
And
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...dproduct=11301

After looking quite hard at possible designs...
I've conceded that without a ton of work, it's going to be very difficult to maintain a scale outline of the F4.
The ducting to the inlet of the fan is the issue...The foam is very thin in the whole area where i would put the wheels.
I can always tilt the battery up toward the front for clearance (maybe even add the plastic rod to rotate the strut 90 degrees) But am going to have to sit on this for a while...
Maybe someone can add pictures on how they did theirs??
There was one earlier in this thread with retracts but wasn't clear enough.

Maiden Report

Well it's been a very long time since the second one was completed and flown...lots of reasons....

But today it happened:

E-flypower fan and motor. 3 blade fan 70mm , himax 4400kv inrunner.
X-Power 60 amp opto esc, Turnigy 5 amp external BEC.
2500mah 25c 4S battery.
Spektrum DX7 running flapperon mix.
Ailerons 15mm down 7.5mm up (50% diff)
Flaps 50% 7.5mm 100% 15mm
elevator 20mm up/down
C of G set at 140mm from the L/E.

Well, I was shaking as I haven't flown a ducted fan for over a year and a half

With this setup it's just under 760watts (Not bad for 2 years++ old)
Lots of power, Lot's of speed (For me at least) and after the range test...
She tracked straight and true on rollout.
Lifted off with a tiny thought and climbed VERY strongly.
This is where I began to tremble.... Wow, what a fast one.
On half throttle she cruised perfect... no trim needed at all (??!!)
On full she was quite fast... enough to scare me anyway. on no throttle, she is a greased brick LOL... never knew exactly what that mean't till today!!

Tested the throws, Flapperons (Highly recommended!!) but surprisingly she doesn't need all that much even to cruise around!!
Took 4 attempts to land her (Came in way too hot) as I didn't want to slow her too much...
She did the most perfect landing mains first, then nose.......
Did puff the battery slightly.......hmmmmmm time to go shopping!!
We have a winner with this one....
Awesome bird....
As if you guys didn't know that already!!!

Thats awesome! Thanks for sharing that. Do you have the retracts on? I haven't flown mine in a couple months since the ESC incident. Please post pics of your retracts when installed if you haven't already.

No retracts yet.... still in the design phase.... the fuselage is very thin where you would normally place the wheel wells.....
Still it can be done... just needs a little more thought...

Yeah she's a real pussycat..... The puffiness in the battery has "deflated" overnight....?? charging up as we speak....
It's another gorgeous and calm bluebird day to go flying!!!

Cheers
Steeve

Funny you said that, I just got in from flying. Shame it's starting to get dark around 8:20. I should put lights on my planes.
BTW, how do you feel about installing the retracts (mains) on the wings or do you feel the wings are too thin?

Not At all
I've installed retracts with electric doors on the HET F4 Phantom:
http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showt...43#post8169392

They are a lot thinner than the J-Power ones... It's the Fuse that's thin... cos' it's right in the intake of the fan unit.... Can be done.... just gotta sit down and seriously do some measurements and see what availableto use ATM. Could get away making a small fairing for the fuselage and narrow wheels.... would still look fairly scale...

I'll give it some thought. Now it's another project on my long list of projects.

Retract Mod

Well the time has come to modify this bird for retracts....

Wow... not as easy as I thought... nose gear looks a little rough ATM but I'll be reinforcing the area a little later.. right now I just cut the holes and the mains have lined up quite well.
The belly will be painted white after this is done.
The retracts: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...dProduct=15200
Sensational bit of kit these...
And the mounts: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...dProduct=15207

NOTE: I actually shortened one of the oleo legs to match the shorter one. These shorter versions are the mains where the long leg is for the nose.
It's going to look like it's on stilts when complete but unfortunately there isn't much I can do except go to wire legs....anyways....

I'll be making gear doors for both the mains and nose similar to my HET F-4 without the mains inner doors, I'll just allow the bottom of each main wheel to be seen from the belly when retracted. The nose main door will be spring loaded open with a spring hinge, and close with an elastic bungy cord that will close it when the gear is retracted.. (That's the plan)
Here are some pics.
I didn't do many measurements.. I laid the gear out and traced around everything. mains are just forward of the mounts for the standard fixed gear. Only made sure that eveything was even on both sides.
The main wheels are standard with what comes with the retract units. However due to clearance issues with the battery (Yep.. it's gonna be tight) I've used a smaller nose wheel....
This one to be exact: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...dProduct=10879

Now the mains will have small pieces of balsa placed fore and aft of the retracted gear as they sit too high when in position... this way I can make it much more aerodynamically smooth and hopefully quicker!!
It may look a bit more lumpy than the fixed gear equivalent... but I'm hoping to make it as smooth and faired as possible... I'm pretty gun with balsa....!!

The details... each of the main mounts have been sanded about 1/8" off the top of the mounts, so they fit in the pockets I made in the wing. These wings are very thin, so on top of mount being sanded, the retract itself will be spacered by washers to about 1/16" so they sit slightly higher so it won't punch a hole in the upper wing skin.... this way the top of the wing still looks stock and underneath I'll hide all these gaps and spaces with sanded balsa strips and gear doors... make a few fairings for this I will!!!
Hard to picture but stay tuned.... hopefully I can get this done fairly fast.

PS: the main gears oleo struts are rotated like this on purpose... If i rotated them 180 degrees the offset strut will stick out a LOT! So it's not strictly scale in the scheme of things but hey... it's a cheap foamy....
If i fail i've already got this saved in my wish list!!! http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...dproduct=16288
