DIY Brushless ESC

Does anyone know where I can find some info on a Brushless ESC?

I am interested in trying to build one of my own.

Thanks.

Do an advanced search here in the forums for "DIY BRUSHLESS" (search title only). A few that should pop up are:

I found Bernhard Konze's 'Flea' code one of the simplest to understand. Although my goal was to convert it to a FF timer I put a great deal of effort into commenting his code and it still works as a normal ESC http://www.flyelectric.ukgateway.net/avr_ff_timer.htm

The first few pages of this Microchip paper (AN1160) is quite good at explaining some principles http://www.microchip.com/stellent/id...pnote=en533912

This thread will help you appreciate how hard it was designing these from scratch http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=200567

Regards, David.

You may find it much easier to modify an existing ESC. You can add the test points for in circuit programming and just work with the code on an existing design. Or you can replace the FETs with larger and higher voltage FETs to make a much larger ESC from a small one, just start with a design that uses IRF FET drivers.
You can find a smoked ESC and rebuild it, generally only the FETs get smoked or sometimes the BEC circuit.
It is much easier to take small steps instead of trying to gobble the whole thing at once.

I like the idea of starting with an existing design. There is source code floating around for some of the commercial units.

Since a development system will be needed the difference in cost between a cheap ESC and a processor board is only a few dollars, so why not use an ESC. The lock bits in the micro may be set, I think that means the micro has to be replaced with an unlocked micro.
To build a DIY ESC means working with surface mounted parts so it should not be a problem.
