Upgrading my HobbyZone Super Cub
After flying my Super Cub completely stock for 6 months, I have finally decided to upgrade it. So about a week ago, I began ordering some ''super charged guts'' for it. The motor that I decided to go with was the Walkera 380M Brushless Inrunner. It had the same dimensions as the stock motor, so that meant that I could just bolt it onto the stock Super Cub gearbox without messing with the firewall and making a new custom motor mount. I received the motor a couple days ago, and it was indeed a very easy swap with the stock brushed 480 motor (for more info on the motor installation, please see this post). But don't be fooled... this Walkera brushless inrunner has 5+ times the amount of power than the stock 480 brushed! The setup I am planning on doing will give my Super Cub around 300 watts of power at 25 amps. That setup includes the following:
Motor - The Walkera 380M Brushless Inrunner ESC - Castle Creations Thunderbird 36 Servos - TowerPro SG-90's Radio - Spektrum DX7 Receiver - Spektrum AR6100 Battery - Impulse 3s 2100mAh 16C LiPo Propeller - GWS 10x6 DD I am also planning on adding ailerons and giving my upgraded Super Cub a nice covering scheme... but that's for later on in this thread. So... here's some pictures of the new motor mounted on my Super Cub. |

Guys,
I have flown my #2 Super Cub with the AON T2815-3002 Brushless inrunner and using the STOCK gearbox which is as close as the Walkera M380 inrunner and I can tell you that I did NOT do anything to the wing assembly nor the STOCK Firewall on my Cub. I do take complete control over the use of High Throttle, especially at and slightly above 1/2 throttle. At a two clicks above 1/2 Throttle the model hovers and can perform very good 3D, of course with ailerons. I believe you can stress this Z-Foam airframe even with the STOCK power system if you command it to do dives and hard UP Elevator recovery. With this Brushless Inrunner power, I would be careful to perform gentle loops and don't gun the throttle when performing Outside loops as this places high loads on the wing root sections due to the inward pressure and the struts will not hold the wing because the struts are not solid. Happy landings Carlos
