Contest
OVSS 4 Sponsored by SOAR Chicago

11 th Annual Fred Fredrickson Memorial Thermal Challenge
July 12 and 13, 2008

PLEASE NOTE OUR FIELD HAS MOVED.
WE ARE NOW NORTH AND WEST OF MORRIS, & SOUTH OF YORKVILLE
SEE THE CLUB WEB PAGE FOR DIRECTIONS

http://www.soarchicago.net/

Registration opens at 8:00 AM. Pilots meeting at 9:00 AM. First Round 9:30 AM each day.
This is a FLYING event, not a landing contest, hence the
following format:
On each day, the contest will be:
1. Four or more rounds of Thermal Duration, with our usual extended flight
tasks. The number of rounds will be dependant on the size of the flight group
and other factors.
2. Seeded Man-On-Man with normalized scoring within the group.
3. Flight groups will be launched under the control of a Launch Master.
4. Winch positions will be assigned for each flight group.
5. FAI (5 points per meter) landing tape bonus (added AFTER the
normalization like the Nats).
Please note the following departures from the AMA Rulebook:
1. No skags/skegs/meathooks or ANY type landing arrestors allowed on the aircraft (there may be a hacksaw available at the field for skegs molded into the nosecone). If you MUST fly with a skeg or built-in arrestor, your landing score will be scored at 50% of the point value for being high maintenance.
2. The timer MAY countdown the last 10 seconds of the flight (you do
anyway, this makes it official).
3. Contestants are allowed ANY NUMBER of models for the contest and may freely choose for each round.
4. No ‘real-time’ telemetry or thermal sniffers will be allowed.

Entry fee will be $25.00 per contestant for one day, or $35.00 per contestant
for both days. Your entry fee includes a provided lunch. Trophies will
be awarded through 5th place each day, with an Overall Champion award for both days. First Place only to Best Sportsman each day.

I have heard from several fliers that they are having trouble getting motels in the area. Seems NASCAR has decided to invade the area on the weekend of the Fred Contest. Ottawa is west of the flying field (35 miles) and has a selection of motels. Dwight is south of the field on RT. 47 and also has a pretty good selection of motels.
There is camping on the field, but the only "service" available will be the porta-potty that will be delivered Friday.
The field is 2.2 miles WEST of RT 47. Plenty of off-road parking. The field will be open for practice on Friday. It is a working sod farm, so please respect the lawn.

See you Saturday morning.

Marc,

I have traded phone calls and emails with Terry Edmonds and Mike Fox (The Iowa boys are coming to the Fred). They have said all of the motels in the area (Morris included) have been full for a while. However, the motels told Mike to keep calling back to see if there are any cancellations. NASCAR has been complaining that the high gas prices are hurting attendance.

If it is any incentive to up attendance at the Fred Contest, my food vendor is the same as last year (Aurellio's Restaurant) and they promise food as good or better than last year.

For those still looking for a motel for the Fred Contest, you can try Tinley Park, IL, at the corner of I-80 and Harlem Avenue. There are a bunch of hotels there, and with a little luck the NASCAR boys won't have them all. The only draw back is that it is about 45 miles to the field, but most of it on I-80.
Hope you can make it.

There are two hotels in Ottawa that are not chain hotels, that might be overlooked by the NASCAR fans... The Surrey, and the Sands. 1/2 hour to the flying field from there.. They are not the greatest places, but not real bad either.
