It should fly about 100 mph with your setup, but remember to constrict the tailcone down to around 80mm, mine was a little uneven but about 78mm and did well. The stock exhaust may give a little more thrust at low speeds, but overall the performance will improve with an exit that is 90% of the fan swept area. When going past 1500 watts in the Mirage you reach a point of diminishing returns very fast. I've tested the airframe up to ~3300 watts and 3.5 kg (glassed) and the fastest run I dopplared was 140 mph downwind. I would estimate the airspeed was only 125, maybe slower; which isn't very fast for that much power.

The CG can move around a little without much problem. You can move it back 1-2 cm (perhaps even more) and fly at high alpha, which also slows down the landing, or move it forward just a bit, which helps keep the nose down on full throttle fly-bys.

100mph is about right if you have 1150 watts or so on the HYK. Tailcone should ideally be 78mm for the Midifan and is easy to get if you slice 8 wedges from the foam cone and close it down, it can be done really neatly just use a brand new snap off blade and take your time.

Your ailerons will have almost no reflex set into them, around 0.5mm to 1mm max depending on the CG. I dont even remember where my CG is now, around the factory position I think, high alfa slow landings are a cinch at 2.2kg AUW with a glassed HL airframe.

That is pretty low. What esc are you using? What are the settings on it? Timing etc.

This is why its not worth using cheap ebay or HC stuff when building an expensive model. You should see at least 50 amps and 1150 watts with the right setup. You may be able to change timing settings in the ESC but its not named mystery for nothing

Yes and no.

There is some very good ebay and HC stuff.

For what it's worth the Lander stuff is pretty cheap too but worth every cent.

Normally I'd say it sounds like your motor is a lower KV than expected, but this is unlikely with the HYK. Most likely the ESC is holding back for some reason. If (fully charged) it sounds like the motor is slowing down rapidly at full throttle, the ESC may have auto-detected the wrong cell count. If you can't work it out, I'd recommend a Turnigy 60 amp.

cheers boys it is my ESC, I pulled another mystery ESC out of my mig that works fine and it sits on 50.3amps @ 1160watts with a fully charged bat, (but them ESC are cheap) they cost me about 10 and i have had no probs so far, but as i progress with my modeling and demand more performance me thinks i should be looking else where for some new ESC?

I have being fiddling around waiting for a gap In our rubbish weather to maiden the mirage and have invested in a fan balancer, so I balanced the flyfly fan to the best I could and man they are out!!! So I ran it up in the mirage and I couldn't believe on how much more power it kicks out (why is this) and the readings I was getting was 1700watts @ 80amps.
What will this do to my motor (HYK 1600 6s) and bats (6s zippy 4000mah 35c) will it be ok to fly with that extra power and shorter time in the air, if I have some throttle control. Or will I just kill something

Motor will die, simple as that The HYK is good for around 60-65 amps max.

The stock fan unit is inefficient, it has 7 blades so a lot more blade area to rotate hence the higher amp draw as the motor works much harder to turn it. Testing has shown the stock fan to be less efficient than a Midi, the extra watts doesnt mean much unless you have a definitive RPM and thrust figure to go with it. Stick to the Midi and have a reliable model.

Hey guys, any idea how to straighten out a warped wing? I didn't notice during the build but I can see now that the wings have a definite bend upwards at the tip. Maybe weighing them down to be flat long enough will flatten them out?
