To do videos... no. You shouldn't need AMA membership.
Spectators are welcome at just about all AMA events. You might have to pay a spectator's admission fee. Depends on the event. |

Park Pilot Program is an AMA membership.
I really don't understand them requiring flying organization membership for spectators... VERY strange. but its thier event, thier rules. |

Not a good way to get people into the hobby is it? There should be three kinds of areas.. Pilot area, spectator area for people with AMA etc.... And another area for people who are brand new, just wanting to see... I think it is a bad idea, but I'm not running the show

Maybe they figure I need insurance if I take my 4000 dollar camera and throw it and hit someone.

But there are people who are really thinking about taking on the hobby. If they go to see a show, and get turned away, what will they think? |

Get more AMA members at the gate, or loose members due to being turned away

Unfortunately the ones who walk away will forever after have a problem with the AMA... when its the club, not the AMA, who set that admission policy. |

I personally do not agree with that policy, however as this event is put on by a private organization they make the rules not the AMA. Brad |

I don't consider it "weaseling out" when an adult decides that they don't want to join AMA when flying a plane that costs less than $200 in thier own back yard... $58 is probably a very high percentage of thier modelling budget.
for me... $58 is a SMALL part of my modelling budget... I signed up for the Life membership. The $375 a year (I opted for the 4 payment plan) is about 1/10 of what I spend a year on kits/ARFs. I can afford to support the AMA. I believe in what the AMA stands for. I support the reasoning behind most of the AMA's programs. I feel that the hobby of Model Aviation NEEDS the representation that the AMA provides. I consider it "less than brilliant" to not sign up a youth for the $1 membership though... 3 consecutive years youth membership qualifies a HS senior to apply for an AMA scholarship. Potentially several thousand dollars and your odds of getting the scholarship are MUCH better than the odds of winning the lotto. (part of all adult membership dues go toward supporting the scholarship program) |

very few people have backyards large enough... but sure, if you can keep it on private property then what's the harm?
I misread a post earlier on in this thread that prompted my response. In todays world of cheap RTF models, it's hard to blame people new to the hobby for thinking that they can just go out and fly anywhere they want. What really bugs me is the local hobby shop that sells these things and doesn't tell people that there are only a few legal places to fly them... Of course you can't be a member of the IMAA without being a member of the AMA first. Frank |

Hi, I enjoy flying small foamies & all are under a pound in flying weight.
My AMA question is: How can I find the Houston Texas urban flying fields that have been presently registered as sanctioned AMA Park Pilot Fields? |
