Hey Gene,

Thanks for the great reviews, from out of the box and up in the air, sounds like a great plane i should have mine today, really sounds like a solid steady flyer, with plenty of power, i did not think of parallel battery packs, thats the 32 yrs experience,i just made up a plug with deans connectors to parallel 2 2200 together,i also have half dozen of these around from t28 so that solve the extra battery problem, where are you going to get the floats for this,i am going to add a camera to mine but i have a lake bout 200 ydrs from me and floats would be great, did you use the stock tx?, i am ordering a dx6i today for mine, and use the dx5 for buddy box,How did this bird glide with no power?well i guess i will have some of my answers when buster brown show up with my palne today but it was great to read you review

Thanks Ron

I used the stock tx for the initial flights but wound up binding it to my DX6i for the last 2 flights.

I almost think that I will cut the throws down a bit. The low rate was fine for normal flying around so I never used the high rate and for training new folks I might like even less. Probably will wind up with throws a little more than the stock "low" rate for the normal and then about half that for low. I will probably do that by simply moving all the rods in one hole on the servos.

I have TP2100 3 cell packs, Parkzone 2200 3 cell packs and FMA 2200 3 cell packs. These fit fine side by side inside the battery compartment with the packs sitting on their side.

Glide is very nice with a very predictable sink rate. The floats I have I purchased from an outfit called foamfloats which I believe is out of business. They are easy to make though and searching the web will get you several how to articles on how to make them.

Appentice First Flight Wing fell Off

Well Title says it all, very disappointing day,Received it today, everything in the box was as should be no bangs or bruises from shipping.put it together with no problems just changed the ec3 for deans connectors and extended the wires a tad for easy plug in,i fly at an abandon airfield ,conditions were very good wind was 5-8mph which was nothing for this plane,it flew as expected like a dream, just a couple clicks on the down elevator when giving some throttle to keep nose down other than that it flew buy itself,i was just circling do some takeoff and landing and it just floated in on 2or3 clicks on the throttle to a landing, then i took it up to see how it was at altitude i guess about 1000ft give or take a couple hundred and was circling above and did some easy loops i was on low rates next thing i saw was the wing separate from fuselage and the fuselage just nosing down toward me,i immediately cut the power and watched the fuselage drop down it was close if i had a big basket i could have caught it,it hit head first thump into the ground and i watched for what seemed like an hour as the wing fluttered down and landed on the other end of the runway, amazing there was not a scratch on the wing, the tape pulled out some where the wire from the ailerons was, after i drove my truck down and got the wing,it drifted bout 300yrds from me. i went back to the wreck .as soon as i looked i saw what i think happened, the plastic horns on the front that catch the rubber bands were missing , you can see from the pics the back are still on,I put all 8 rubber band on and the wing was very secure but for some reason these ends came off i can see not other reason as to why the wing came off, here are some pics i know we love to see carnage,i just hung it in the garage and am going to bed and forget bout if for a while, all in all i wish i could still fly it it flew with grace and beauty and was a very good flyer

Wow Ron, that really sucks. Are the tips just glued on over the "nubs" or did the tips break off? From your pictures it looks as if there is a plastic rod and some "T" caps just glued on over them. If those came loose I would say you are due for a complete refund or a new airplane there buddy. That absolutely should not happen. I'm almost happy that I waited to fly mine so I can make sure it's ok (sorry for you though).

I just checked mine and they seem on there pretty tight. Gene, how are yours holding up?

David (Horizon), care to chime in?

Hi Helisailor: Actually I dont have the DX5e/AR500 combo. I guess right now it only comes with an RTF A/C, the apprentice being one....Thanks to GWH I was able to check out the DX5e....Originally I just wanted more range out of the LP5DSM2/AR6100 that came with my CX2....While this combo gives an 'Honest" 300 ft' range, (great for the little heli indoors) I needed more for my 5ft. span, 20oz. concoction to battle our Montana winds.....People said it could'nt be done.....Including Horizon AND my LHS...Guess what! Switching the 6100 for a 6200...Bingo!! 600Ft. HONEST!!! More on this little "diamond in the rough" later.

Well its a new day sun is shinning and i went in the garage and my new apprentice is still smashed to pieces,should have went out the front door instead, anyway Sal you are right you can see from the pic that this is just a rod with plastic caps glued over them, and for 2 drops of glue on each one could have saved me all this trouble,they should be threaded or have a dow stuck threw them ,something more than just glue or lack of it,I will be calling hobbyzone today and hope to get a new plane,if it was something i did tell me and i would fix it my self,but i think this is a quality control issue and i had no influence on it and feel they should replace it,i was telling my my wife before i went to bed last night ,it could have been worse i could have watched it come down and go threw my truck windshield and would have to drive home looking at the apprentice sticking out of my windshield{LOL}

If they came off that soon (maiden) i would say they were not glued in the 1st. place. All new owners might want to GLUE them NOW.A lot of foam wings are secured to the fuse. in this manner w/ out problems. One of them being the H.Z.S.Cub of which i have hundreds of flights w/ out failure...RTR

snoopy3440, I'm really sorry to hear of, and see the extent of your maiden flight damage. For the price you pay for an Apprentice, this should NOT happen! It looks like a QC manufacturing problem to me, well within warranty rules. I sure hope Horizon makes it right for you.

I agree that they probably were were not glued at all just very snug pressed on, when i when first put the rubberbands on i actually tried spinning these but not very much pressure just a quick check, i think there pressed on and the pressure gave the impression that they were glued tight, but once the rubberbands were on and the stress of flight i guess it was to much and they came off,I would suggest reglueing these for all new owners as i will do when ever i get this plane going. i still must say this is a great plane ,a real floater, total contrast to t28,very relaxing and great to teach on,i was flying just watching it go around and seemed like it could have flown forever by itself.i cut the throttle into the wind 5-8mph and it seemed to just float for bout hundred yards my trojan without the flaps would have taken a nose dive,do not let this put anyone off buying this, just check and re glue these horns and you will have a great flyer, THe size of this with that big wingspan looks great coming buy and its so gentle and easy to handle ,i cannot wait to get flying it again, for now t28 time

Just got off the phone with hobbyzone and told him bout my first flight ,he thougt the same thing that these were just pressed and not glued, and being that its a new plane that horizon will replace it,he gave me there support number and told me to call monday,i just pulled the fusalge down from its hanger to check the back 2 horns and looking from the front of the plane the one on the left was very secure i could not budge it,but the one on the right even though it was tight as i kept pressure on it,it started to come off ,so there you have it this one is just pressed on no glue,i would definatly suggets to all new owners to glue these even if they feel tight,I guess we are beta testers on this new plane

I just bought one today. Mine seem very tight but I will glue them anyway just to make sure. I'm new and I have crashed my aerobird 3 serveral times (once because the very same pin/rod broke) but if I crash my new apprentice, I may cry.

Really, Really sorry to hear about your plane.
