zagi 400, no spar, 1700 battery, while
getting more aggressive in my flying,
a dive evoked a wild flapping action
in the wing, ending in the motor being ejected and caving in the end bell after
striking terra firma.
does a spar need to be glued in a slot or
can more strapping tape solve the flapping?
alum arrow shaft or carbon fiber rod?

I would go with the spar instead of the tape.
As far as which one it's up to you. I've seen it done both ways (carbon and aluminum).
Pick the lightest one you can find.

The 400X comes with a spar at CG, 8" from nose. The 'X' instructions say to mount underneath, but have read and IMHO think the top would be better.
Aluminum or carbon ? I like carbon, bends but wont stay bent. Found some carbon spars at a bow-n-arrow shop they use for inserts. 1/4 X 33" , 5$ @ pc.

A good spar system I've seen used on a Zagi:
Thin CF rod (.06") with the "A" shape top and bottom.
This setup has demonstrated a 100% throttle dive from 150' pulled into a rapid loop at 50'... no flap...
1/4" CF tube would work, and it really doesn't matter where you put it as long as it's secure.
Good luck, once they're soggy you have to be absolutely sure it's straight when you get it back together.
