RCPowers.com Extra 300- Free plans

I can never resist a free plan so I downloaded this one from Dave at rcpowers.com two days ago and got busy. I still have to install the electrics, but I think it's going to be a nice one.

See link to post for plans--->> http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showp...3&postcount=10

Looks good. I also downloaded the plans, but then got busy with other builds. What are you planning on powering this with? Looking forward to a report on the maiden! BTW, coudn't help but notice your pilot looks a little like your avatar.

Thanks! Just finished it tonight. It'll be ready for a maiden when the wind finally calms down around here. Here it is ready to fly at 15 oz. I added wheels and tail skid for takeoffs and landings. Power is a tower pro 2410-12 with a 9x4.7 APC prop

Well, the winds finally subsided enough this evening that I was able to go out to the park and test fly my new Extra 300 under the stadium lights after dark. I plugged in the battery, double checked the control surface movements and floored the throttle. After a roll of about 15 feet she rotated to vertical, whereupon I reduced the throttle and brought it into a nice hover about 25 feet up. It was not as stable as I thought it would be, so I pushed forward and leveled it out and trimmed it properly. After few more circuits around the field I landed it and replaced the 910mah battery with a 1350mah and took off again. It was more stable with the cg moved forward and was easier to hover. I then did some mild aerobatics and rolling circles, etc. I did harriers and knife edges. It was really fun! The only bad thing I noticed was that the fuselage twists while rolling fast. It is weird to see the horizontal stab out of alignment with the wing. It does return to normal once the air load is removed. I will have to figure out some way to brace it without adding too much weight.

Remember my big Red, White and Blue Tribute foamy? ( no longer in production ) It used to twist at the tail too. I think it's because both have long fuselages and 6mm foam doesn't have enough stiffness. I'd be careful trying to stiff it up and not add anymore weight. Then it won't 3d as well...

Yes I remember it.
I flew the extra again this morning. I now think some of what I was seeing was part optical illusion because of the ailerons being deflected so far. Anyway, it still flew great. I think I'll just leave it alone and concentrate on my 3d flying skills so I don't doink it.

I fly mine with the center of gravity right on the wing spar, or 1.75" (45mm) back from the leading edge at the wing root.

Got a video of a flight this morning. It was a little windy, but it was still fun. Enjoy!
