Welcome to the asylum Robby. Unlike Sean I won't require you to read everything form page one. I will require you to read and report on all posts for the next three months. BTW....The report is due tomorrow This is for two reasons. First is to test your psychic abilities and the second is to keep me from inserting my foot in my mouth up to the knee cap.

We try from time to time to actually talk about woodie planes and building styles. Every once in a while we actually keep to the topic. Lots of good people on this thread and a LOT of experiance in building with wood. Some of us even write code for web pages.......

I used to build and fly rockets when I was a teen. Even competed in NAR Sanctioned events. Was a member of the Summit City Aerospace Modelers (SCAM) in Ft. Wayne, IN, until I left for the USAF after High School. I've seen people I knew then on Discovery Channel specials.

Meeting celebrities: My daughter Katie has worked at the big FBO at regional airport for around 15 years. During that time she has met tons of celebs flying in. She's said some surprising comments about some of the actors we all know. As example, she got to spend about 20 minutes chatting with Steve Martin and said he is one of the nicest, down to earth and charming gentlemen she has ever met. I would not have guessed that.

The one that blew me away and I still laugh about is the day she got to meet Steven Tyler (Aerosmith). Growing up her word for him was "hawt". The day she found out he would be coming in and she would get to meet him you can imagine was .................interesting. She called Ashley, her step-sister and the AF commercial daughter I mentioned before. Ashley races up there, they greet the plane and he agrees to a photo with both of them. She calls me later and I ask how it went. A sort of disappointed "OK" was all I got. I figured out why later. Katie is a tad over 6' tall. Ashley is 5'11". The photo is with the girls on both sides with their arms around his waste. Other than the obvious age difference it looks like a photo of two sisters and their little brother. He's about a head shorter than either of them.

GDJ, any Dob that you need a 12ft ladder to use is just way too big! I think being able to visually observe exoplanet transits is a bit extreme. I do some visual but I'm mostly a astrophotography guy though sadly I haven't done any in a while. A group of us make occasional treks to Ft. Davis since its "close".

I agree with Sean on the build log location. We all enjoy watching other people convert kits to sawdust while randomly gluing pieces together into a rough approximation of a sailplane shape.


I'll be happy to entertain suggestions on what I should build next. I really think I need to build a Duet, soonish. An Oly-II S/SX may also be on the list. I'd love to build a Yardbird but for the price of the pod and boom I can buy a Oly-III. I also have an Allegro Lite short kit sitting on the shelf waiting to be built. I'll probably build a wooden pod for that one, just 'cause.

I believe its 16 ft. And it was AMAZING. Messier's almost hurt they were so bright. Saw four components of Hickson 50, THE most difficult Hickson. The Double Quasar? Looked like headlights coming at me.

Of all the kits I wish I had bought, anything to do with a Bubble Dancer would be on my short list. I have waited YEARS and YEARS for a Bubble Dancer kit. Not short kit, kit... alas I have never seen one. Maybe I missed it. You'd think as kits go, a BD would be a 'best seller'. You'd think...

Then there is... I think it was called a Majestic... I think Mark Miller or Laser Arts or someone made a kit. Classic beauty. Alas I see I missed out on those as well. You snooze you lose. The Grand Esprit kit. Remember some guy was going to bring back a bunch of the Airtronics kits? Never happen as far as I know. Maybe it did... Ooo ooo and a Whaleaire!!! What a Kit!

Be nice to get a short kit of Aquila or Aquila XL just the hard parts to cut. And Ray's Windfree XL? Years in the making. Still no Windfree XL. Do not get me wrong!!! I know making woodie kits is a labor of love, not profit!!!

A Duet? Nice plane... But why a two meter? Two meters are hard. I mean hard to fly. Bigger flys so much better. When I fly a 3 meter I get at least a minute longer on average every flight. Sure sure sure... I suck as a pilot. Lack of practice!!! (Two year gaps in flying ain't gonna make me a champ is it?) A My OWN fault. But still bigger (to a point) flies better. A two meter, I find lift in the first 60 seconds or its time for landing practice. 3 meter? I can at least double that critical time.

So what does that have to do with your next build? Beats me?!

My vote? Pages and pages right here, of you building a Merlin. Talk about balsa dust!!!

Sean, I can relate to your daughters stories. I too worked for an FBO in MS, for about 8 years after I seperated from the USAF. I too had the opportunity to meet Steven Tyler when I parked their aircraft prior to a concert. I also was a huge Aerosmith fan (and still am). I was pretty shocked to see just how short he is (and strange too).

I'm not really a name dropper, and don't get too excited by celebrity, but my best experience came while I moved to CT and worked for an FBO after Hurricane Katrina. Bill Cosby had done a show at one of the nearby casinos and was in our lobby the next morning waiting for his aircraft to arrive. He was just as I'd heard he would be, dressed in sweat pants and a Georgetown sweatshirt. One of my employees sons had just returned from serving overseas in the war on terror, and Mr. Cosby and she were discussing it. This was about 07:30 EST on a Sunday morning. He asked if her son was at home, she responded with, "Yeah, he's probably still in bed." Bill Cosby asked her to dial his number on the phone and hand the handset to him. When her son answered, he introduced himself and thanked the young man for his service to our country. I had grown up with my Moms Bill Cosby records and 'The Cosby Show' and I always had a certain amount of respect for him, but never as much as I had that morning. I only wish he'd have run for President.

You might consider posting it in the October 2012 to March 2013 Build off! thread in addition to here. I think a build thread here would be a little lost in all the chatter. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy all the banter and casual conversations that take place here but I don't know that I come here any more to follow builds. I hope that comment won't get me banished and placed on everybody's ignore list.

So Gang, I decide to leave work after 11 hours, and wife decided to be on computer, I caught the last few minutes of the big debate, as the playstation needed it's bearings spun There- I'm done with todays' politics. I guess it's time to take out the camera for proof- there's enough room in Living room, I just gotta climb over 4 boxes to get to the 2 meter wing!

Personally I think that could change for the better. I know everyone here has literally share their lives, their ups and downs, their triumphs and tribulations, for the last 3 or 4 years. In the beginning it was about Steve building an Oly III if I am not mistaken.

But you are right, perhaps both? Or only one. I simply enjoy the company here , but finding woodie content is hard in this thread. I may simply revive an old BB-XL thread. That makes it on-topic.

Well, I happened to have been fortunate (?) enough to go to college in my formative years in LA, and well, I've got stories to tell, many of which won't "fit" here. Okay, maybe they will, but I've got to come up with a trainload of euphemisms to make it work here, and I'm still stuck on your "checkers" version... nuf sed.

Anyway, sometime I'll share the "true" story of the House of Blues, and how it was started (had something to do with a grant from the Harvard foundation), and also a bunch of interesting stories of having worked in the entertainment industry for a while... more later!

Don't worry, Mark Miller owns the rights to the Bubble Dancer EZ. He acquired them from Polecat a while back but hasn't yet had time to dedicate to that project. I patiently wait. Hopefully he'll find time between supporting his family and supporting his hobby to spend some time on the BD-EZ. I appreciate the challenge that presents so I'm willing to wait as long as it takes.

I try to check on Isthmus (Mark Miller), Skybench (Ray Hayes) and several others at least quarterly to make sure I haven't missed anything.

Why 2M? Dunno, I just like the smaller planes I suppose. I've got a BoT on again/off again as other projects come up. The next month is going to be hectic between kids birthdays, work and volunteering at the U.S. F1 GP. Detroit GP is a joke. The drivers will hate yet another crappy road course that isn't Monaco. They just won't say it. At least the Austin track was built with F1 in mind. V8 Supercars in March as well. May have to buy tickets to that if I can't get in through the back door. *THAT* is what NASCAR should be. Big V8 powered door slammers driven like DTM! I digress.

I think once I frame the wing for the BoT I may tackle my screwed up elevator push rod. I knew I shouldn't have followed the plans. I blame it on sleep deprivation. After that I'll crank out the Allegro wing and bolt that to my scratch built electric pod and boom for local ALES contests. Then I'll start building what ever it is I decide I need to build next. Heck I may just get a Duet to help support Mark and a Oly II-SX to help support Ray. I've already got a Chrysalis but I keep thinking I wouldn't mind building another so I could do it right this time.
