Good info Bobby.

One of the best builders I know thins down wood glue. Looking at his builds, there is no sign of glue around any type of joint. Makes the drying time quicker too. I can't say what his method was for laminating.

Thanks for that idea with the glass Bobby, I agree wholeheartedly with spreading glue thin, theres nothing worse than it oozing out of joins, and then having to handle the newly assembled parts to get rid of excess.
I think on 99 days out of 100, using the PVA would have been just fine for the laminate, I got caught out this time in the final stages of curing.

Guys something I ask your advice on is doing a silicon hinge for the flaps, I've never done it before. I'm not sure if the aerodynamic benefits will be offset by the weight of the silicone join, the flaps will be between ribs (edit) 5 and 14 and 22" long. Perhaps I would be better off sticking to the usual hinge material- two lengths of material iron-on sewed down the middle.
Thanks in advance for any advice anyone with experience can offer.

I was just sitting here watching TV and a commercial came on that said if you have a woodie for more than 4 hours to consult a doctor. I have had a woodie for 30 years. Yikes!

Guys, what do you think about this color scheme. Yeah, I know, it's ripped off from my Spirit ARF but I've always enjoyed the colors and it does look different on the Oly. I'm looking for a scheme that looks nos and woody and like a sailplane. The underside will be the same as the ARF, all white with a big black stripe surrounded by big yellow stripes on the tip of the inside port panel. I can see my orientation on the 2m very well up high and thought why not see the same with this plane. Does that make any sense?

Dwells first of all, your PS skills do Jim Allen's very fine model much more justice than my bodgy painting efforts!
That looks very clean to me, and the underside scheme with the black and yellow wing stripes sounds like a good contrast to the top. Sounds OK in theory anyway.

Mark, no viagra for you mate..shiver me timbers! Its been a while between woodies for me, so I'm going to make the most of this one while it lasts.
No doubt I will summone up the strength for more no doubt..

Steve, the fuse looks great. Did you by any chance weigh the difference in the tail feathers B&A the cutouts?

No I didn't weigh the cutouts i'm afraid, I usually use a friends (neighbours) dig scales to weigh planes but he is away. I holesawed the panels to compensate for the removable tailplane system, which has little spruce blocks inside the fuse tail to screw down the tailplane.
I would guess maybe 10 grams was sawed out at most.


Fast (and a bit risky) way to initially shape fuse balsa block components and nose, but it needs a lot of care and a deft touch with the bench mounted sanding disk





The initial forming done with 180 grade sanding blocks




The initial fuse shaping ends here for now. Filling and more shaping is to come after the wings can be plugged in for overall form reference

I would love some detail of how you are screwing down the tail feathers. I want a removable setup myself.

Hi Don, not many pics as yet, I haven't had the time to do much but get the preliminaries done, and I have been waiting on the delivery of a new workbench top (flatter and more pin friendly) it arrived this week.

Work and circumstance has kept me away from home and the bench, but that will change at the end of this week if I have my way.

I am actually glad that I haven't been able to build over the past three weeks, we are still getting massive changes in the weather. Last week we had another dry change come through overnight, from 88% relative humidity to 48% ! The 0.014 carbon capped wing spars told the tale.
Hoping the weather will settle down soon.

Yeah, I know Steve, never enough bench time. I have only completed my tail feathers and went ahead and covered them just for some instant gradification. I probably won't even start the fuse until I can get my area (garage) cleaned and a flat set up...this will take me till Christmas but it sure is fun. I'll stay tuned.

Here are some pics of the tail section. This is my first time covering with Monokote (only tissue paper before when I was a kid) and it goes on very easily. I got a big chunk off the ass end by hand cutting the lattice. I hardened the inside edges of the cutouts with thin CA and weighted one section at a time to keep it flat and ridged (what a smokin ).
I'm going to bolt down the section to the fuse (removable), as you suggested, atop a thin foam saddle (for a little give) so the 1 inch diameter Texas weeds I land in don't break it off... Monokote ripping .

Like I mentioned ealier, I'm using the color scheme from the Spirit that I'm flying now.
