I fell off the skid of a Huey about 10' off the ground when I was 20. I've had lower back pain for most of my life because of it. I was carrying about 80# in my ruck sack and a machine gun (M-60). The gun had a 100-round starter belt in it and I almost shot the chopper down when I hit the ground and rolled down the hill... (Central Highlands, Viet Nam)... A wreck in 2000 in Houston made it worse... and last year, I stepped backwards into a prairie dog hole, (looking up at a glider, of course), and hobbled around for weeks... Gettin' old is not for sissies. It sure beats the alternative...

Fruno,

You should heal up pretty quick with a fracture. I wish my collar bone would have snapped as it would have been much better. I got what's pictured below and now have a lump the size of a golf ball on my shoulder, feels fine now. The ortho dude said surgery would take another 18-24 months to heal if I want the bump gone...F that.

What a hoot!
Darth has it covered by saying that getting old is not for sissies!
Hell, it's a wonder if any of us make it past 20. Especially with some of our anal pranks as young'uns.
These dang surgeries aren't any fun for sure. Recovery on some are VERY lengthy. After 3 complete knee replacements I think I can speak with authority.

Jack
I will carry a dust off rag for your new moldie....saturated with fish sauce.

Don
Ow indeed!

Hey Don, seeing that pic reminded me of anatomy classes i took some years ago, the amazing thing I recall about the rotator cuff is the only solid connection it has to the rest of our frame is that AC joint? , no wonder its a common injury! OUCH indeed mate. That's one I've not done yet, and i don't want to add it to my list either.

Gee we have some rugged old salts around here. Surviving Nam, in-country accidents and all of life's other trial after trials, its no wonder folks look to a relaxed hobby like RC soaring as they get older, you'd assume its pretty safe - until you fall into a prarie dog hole that is. I hurt my back last weekend Jack, mowing a neighbors lawn I was walking backwards and lost balance in a shallow grass covered hole and went over, was going up hill so at least the push mower didn't follow me. It'll take a while for the sciatic strain to come good.

Goin' flying this arv all the same, been a while since the LB2 had an outing and the Discus CS needs to be launched and flown with its new flaps and trim setup.

Yeah... I broke my back in two places while at Ft. Hood and a couple of weeks later I was running around the desert at Ft Irwin for 3 months of training. I was the M-60 gunner for our squad which turned out to be the only thing that saved my butt. I got to stand up in the hatch of the APC while we were on the move. I was in Armored Cav instead of Air Cav so we had big beer cans to ride around in instead of copters. I still have problems from time to time from that but as Jack said, it beats the other choice.

Getting old

I feel like a wus compared to you guys...I had cataract surgery on one eye just before Christmas. I'm only 48 and I'm sure it's because of a lifetime spent outside staring up at the sun trying to follow little airplanes around!

Still laughing over the "fish sauce" shot...made my day Mr. G...thanks .

Yeah Steve, you don't want an AC tear on your list at least not a full separation. I was strung out like Favre on hydrocodone for 6 months. There was absolutely NO comfortable sleeping position . Worst deep pain I've ever had.

Damn Jeff, where were the breaks? Thats heavy duty stuff, you're a lucky man.

The fish sauce shot is a personal thing. Should you ever get to meet Jack (Darth) ask him to tell you his war story of the fish sauce and rice...a real hoot!

Steve
I'm envious!! It has finally warmed up here, but, the wind is hustlin' along.

The breaks were just below my shoulders but were more like cracks than actual breaks. Still felt like someone was digging into my back with a hot poker. Happened when I fell flat on a hardwood gym floor. Lucky for me there was an Army nurse right there at the time. They hauled my butt to the hospital where they turned right around and released me. They called my 1SGT the next day and told me to get back to the hospital cause they had just figured out it was broken. Typical Army get it right the first time bovine scientology. They really couldn't do squat for it anyway.

On the fish sauce thing... I remember hearing a story of revenge about how a guy lost his house to his ex in a divorce. Before he left he put some fish and shrimp into the curtain rods. Made the house stink like crazy and his wife couldn't find where the smell was coming from. He got the house back for a song, changed the curtain rods out and lived happily ever after. Hummmm Think that would work on Jacks moldie? I need a cheap composite plane...

I'd be a wus when it came to me having to watch as someone was coming at my eye with a knife! Usually I like knowing EXACTLY what they're going to do to me but in this case I'd have to pass. Don't tell me about it, knock me out and wake me when it's all over!!

Well, Jeff... I'm the youngest of 10 kids... if it's been done, it's been done to me... I'm usually ready for what comes along...

On my moldie... I'm easy, but I ain't cheap... I just posted the last pics of it before it gets the balance/set up treatment and maidened... Man, those thangs are a lot of hassle, but if it flys like it's baby sister... I'm gonna love it.

Speaking of body damage: Steve, tell everyone about your encounter with a marsupial early last year.
