If you think I'm an idiot thats fine with me because thats what I think of myself. I have never scratch built before, but I am planning to now. My E-flite UMX Extra 300 3D has taken a beating over the past year, so I want to use the same electronics but scratch build the airframe. I already know what and how I am going to create it, but (I'm sure this sounds dumb to you) how do I apply the color scheme? Should I use permanent markers, paint, or send it to somewhere else to get it colored?

Thanks for the help,

Joker, don't be so hard on your self! We're all here because we have a similar intrest. I use $tree foam and cellophane to cover mine. If you want a color scheme, you can use markers or airbrush then cover with clear packing tape as well. Or use colored packing tape! Just make sure to test markers or paint on a test piece first as some will eat the foam! The goal is always to build strong but lightweight. Good luck!

Thanks Marc for all your support. Sorry, still some questions though.

1. Will $tree foam be too heavy or just right?
2. What kind of glue should I use?
3. How much should it weigh in the end?
4. If it is too heavy, should I reduce the size or use lighter foam?

Thanks again Marc

http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1333878 Start here...it takes me a while to figure on what to build next! My first $tree plane was a 540 Edge and I loved the crap out of it. It was my (gateway) scratchbuilt! now i'm addicted! I use hot glue and white gorilla glue(GG). the white GG I use because it's light weight. I will Tack things together with Hot glue after GG. you need to clamp or tape parts together when using GG and it isn't instant like hot glue but strong and light! 1 glue stick = 4g so it all adds up.

it sounds like you want lots of wing and payload and i have a suggestion for you and its cheap only thing you have to build it but that in its self can be fun and rewarding and that is Ed's peace drone here is a link to a vid
Peace Drone v1.5 - new collapsible wing, elevons (7 min 43 sec)
this should be fine for the power system you have.
