S.E.L.T. Simpe Electric Low wing Trainer

I wanted a to go for my first low wing , a simple to build low wing trainer .

I had a Tower Pro 2409 18 motor lying around , so started building . low wing , some dehedral to make it easy to fly and light weight for low speed.

An APC 9x6 SF prop seemed right for the job , and a 1350mAh Lipo wrapped it up.

The maiden went smooth , and it flew lovely , landings were soft but it got sand in everywhere as there is no grass where i fly.

So i put some gear on it, and started to pretty it up a bit

Very nice!!

Do you have any pictures from the build process?
Maybe some plans?

Thanks for sharing,
Rony

Ive drawn up the plans .
Let me know if i missed anything.
I did not include the rounded corners in in the plan , as they were done by putting a tin on the coro and cutting around it, just do what looks right there.
The plane is all 3mm coro , with a 20mm spar the airfoil came to 26mm.
AUW should be 800g or 28oz
The plane does have a rudder , but it'll fly just as well without one.

I have found that it is better to give the motor a slight down angle to get the thrust line right. I also estimated that , so no pic.

Using a 1350mAh Lipo the plane balanced with the lipo fairly close to the firewall , so an slightly larger lipo will also work, just move it further back.

Do you happen to know how much it weights?

also, where did you connect the landing gear?

Target weight is given above with the plan , the landing gear has to be as close to the leading edge as possible, otherwise itl tip over when you push the throttle open .
I have removed my landing gear again , it lands so slow it doesnt need it, i just added a small piece of coro just outside the servo to protect it on landing.

Hi BEX,

Your designs are awesome. You have good building skills. I was just looking for a low wing trainer as this one.

Few questions, here. Does the fuse need any former? Would it be a good idea to use 4mm coro and double it to make spar?

What size of IC engine would match this plane if I want to make this an engine plane?

Regards,

Hi Circle. Sorry for the late reply, I have scaled down my RC time due to other new hobbies.
I did not use any former in the fuse, used 3mm coro for the fuse.
Rather use wood for the spar , it is just easier and stonger, but 4mm doubled will work. I have never flown IC , and have no idea what would work. 250W electric is good if the weight stays below 1 kg . Build it light.

Thanks for your reply, BEX and draftman1. I would try a .15 engine. I designed the plane as per plans but to my wonder, the plane is always tail heavy. I tried with .15 engine also but it is not of much help. Can anyone please help with any suggestion?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Balancing a plane can sometimes be $#@! If you have already moved everything you can to the nose and its still tail heavy, then maybe add landing gear or if you have it, remove the tail wheel, etc... Space out the .15 as far front on the mount as possible. After that, its time to start cutting down the tail or stretching the the nose. I can't tell you how many times I had to start over because, of twists in the airfoil, or balancing didn't work out. In the "show your spads" thread the Mugi in the pic is the 4th airframe attempt for that plane... I discarded the 1st one because it pitched to the left badly. the 2nd and 3rd airframes were discarded because of not paying attention and I cut the coro wrong.... it happens. But it's worth it when you finally get it right, cause coro is pretty tough...

Thanks Corocrumpler. Your words are truly encouraging I will start all over again! For the current build, I had already added all that you said, including the landing gear, but nothing was of much help. May be I would try OS 25 FX engine and move the battery forward. But if this also does not work, I would consider starting over again.

I would post the progress once done.

Thanks once again!!!
