show and tell (my molded DLG build thread)

I am posting this thread to show off my work from the past two weeks. I was going to wait until something was flying, or parts were out of the mold, but I am a bit eager I guess and decided to post.

I have just pulled all my molds away from their plugs and thought you all might enjoy the build thread just as I have enjoyed many of yours.

The plans for this airplane are to be a relatively cheap to make, just for fun DLG, that would have all the performance of a competition ship, but does not meet competition span REQS. So here's a list of interesting things about the design.

Fully CAD modeled in PRO-E and CNC cut molds.
Elevator, aileron only.
72" span (violates F3K rules, as I said, just for fun
wing designed in MiraeX, and entire aircraft optimized in a MathCAD code I wrote myself.
Airfoil is my own variant of the AG12, 6% at tip, and 10% at root.
weight should be ~12 ounces at start, hopefully lower later.

So anyway, enjoy the pictures......and comment away!

And I might as well show the CAD screenshots I took. This airplane is also my Aeroelasticity project for school, so that will be interesting......... Life sure would be easier without these projects......but not nearly as fun

BTW it is still unnamed, if you have any suggestions, send them in!

Yeah I thought it would be that, just pulling ya leg. It'll be an interesting build. Why no rudder? a model that size won't notice the weight, and it'll give you more control.

The mould in pic 3 looks a bit wavy at the edges 2/3 of the way down the span, camera distortion or something?

No, it is a bit wavy, for several reasons I wont be able to get the molds out to pristine manufacturing standards like I have seen on a few other threads... I cannot even claim to have equal quality molds, but they should be good enough to make an airplane perform nicely.

What you are probably looking at.... the bright spot is the wingtip closeout. The waves I speak of are so small the can only be seen in the reflections when your eye is right down on the mold.

Very nice. I think there is a niche for a fun/sport DLG in this size range.
I also wonder why no rudder? And what is your theory on the vertical stab in front of the horizontal stab?
Keep us posted on the progress.

Well, there is room to add a rudder to it if one so desired, but I found that with my older DLG I used mainly elevator and aileron to turn. Many people say rudder turning is more efficient, which it is IF you use rudder to maintain a coordinated turn therefore leaving the fuselage at zero sideslip. However rudder only turning is very draggy as you place the fuselage at large sideslip angles to the flow.

Im going to give it a go with no rudder, and see how she flies then add it on the 2nd one if necessary

On the vertical being in front of the horizontal.....this will let me stick the control rod for the horizontal out the back of the carbon tube without having to drill any exit holes toward the rear of the airplane. Those holes would REALLY compromise the strength of the boom. My last DLG's boom constantly broke at the holes in the tailboom made for control rods.

Well I'm going to see how it flies first, and also how much spare time I have in the summer. So we'll say I'm not opposed to selling it, but I dont have any immediate plans to do so. The good news is that I'm interested in people having fun, and I'm not in it for the money, so it wouldnt be much. I'll wait until I have one out of the molds to really think about this anymore

Nice work.

The CAD pics seem to show anhedral of the tip panels. Is that right or just an illusion?

you are correct, and its just for looks. There is also some washout built in that is NOT just for looks, I am trying an aero trick to reduce the drag at min sink a bit. but again...... we'll just have to wait until it flies to see if I was right or horribly wrong

If my schedule holds, that should be not this weekend...but the following. 25th-27th.

I laid up a practice pod tonight, it will be heavy, but hopefully will look neat! I was tired of making molds and wanted to lay something up!

BTW these are some of the best "name" lists to look around on.

May I recomend the "wind" gods?

Aeolus --------King of the Winds
Boreas /Aquilo --North Wind
Zephyr /Favonius --West Wind
Notus /Auster --South Wind
Eurus /Eurus --East Wind
