EDF64 F4 Phantom Build

Wanted an inexpensive F4 so just had to do it myself with FFF. Based it off the parkjets.com pusher F4. Wing and tail surfaces are FFF covered with newsprint and WBPU. Makes 'em nice and stiff. Wing will be removable with nylon bolts to be able to get to the fan.

Inlet area worked out fine at 125% FSA and the outlets = 90%. Got my outlet vacuum formed this weekend and was able to do a prelim static thrust test. I'm using the GWS blue motor on 3S with the EDF64. ~530G of thrust so should work fine. AUW right now is only 540G with a Loong Max 2250 but I'm sure I'll add a couple of ounces in finishing. Still, should be decent performance.

The scale works out somewhere in between the EF-16 and the GWS15 as shown in the pic.

Regards
Ted

Thanks AMK. BTW, your tagline is sooo true

Got it CN, thanks. The Skyhawk is on hold till I finish this F4. I've been project hoppin and nearly finished up a Lynx with one of Don's motors today so the focus is on the Phantom till completion now...

The Eagle decals are mostly stock with some black monokote for the various inlets and vents and such. I did waterslides for my '16.

Cheers

Got'er maidened...

Finally got some work done on my F4. Sat morning was decent so decided to maiden before I started putting on paint and decals. 600G AUW at this stage on 580G of static thrust using a 20C ABF 2100mah.

She flew great . Very scale-like speed. Not a barn burner at all but solid performer.

Handlaunch was easy. Needed a little trim but otherwise a good maiden. No video yet so first vid will be after paint...

All primered and ready to spray. Then I have a couple of Boomers Mav's and a cockpit to build as well as some other details like the exhaust nozzles. That's the batt access hatch under the nose, not a cheater and the fuse is just sitting on the wing hence the gap at the rear.

Regards,
Ted

Ted, very nice......
i built a pusher version but the edf bug is bitting again.
are there any plans of selling the edf tube set up you have made?
i am very interested in one, in particular in 70mm size.
i have no idea in making thrust tubes and outlets, it would be greatly appreciated if you would be able to sell a couple.
TIA

Thanks all. I appreciate the compliments!

Hey Smkn, the outlet I formed was set up for 90% FSA for the EDF64 which by my calcs is two outlets about 1.5" diameter. Quick calcs says those outlets provide less than 80% FSA for a 70mm fan (I'm assuming the motor holder is about an inch in dia. or ~5.2 sq in. FSA). The other problem you're gonna run into is the inlet area. At 5.2" that means you'd need 6.5 sq in. of inlet area. The inlets would have to be enlarged or some cheaters cut. The EDF64 only needs ~5" for 125% inlet. You'all correct me if my math is off...

I'd be happy to sell some outlets for the 64mm fan for a few bucks but I don't think I'm up to making a new mold for a 70 due to the issues there...

Regards

Love the 4's

Foxflier,

The build looks great; your chamber work is very nice. What weight are you expecting?

Hey, thanks Jeff.

I'm hoping to add less than a couple of ounces with the paint, decals, and the exhaust nozzles so I'm gonna call it at 23oz gross for now. During maiden it flew nicely out of my hand and really floated with the power off so I'm pretty sure I have good margin.

Started the camo tonite. I'm doing an Olds F4C scheme

Thanks Stacker

Hey 'Hawk, I used Model Master acrylics on it but I've started using regular old acrylic craft paints on everything else. Model Master covers a little better but you can't beat the price of the craft paints IMHO.

I posted a bunch of F16 profiles at http://www.foxflier.com/f16profiles.zip
Look at the aah.jpg pic in that zip file. It includes the FS paint numbers for the Israeli camo. The green (sky) I had to mix myself and I just eyeballed it as I couldn't find a model master number.

Regards,

Ted
