Introducing the Fishbed Foamy Mig-21 EDF

Over the past few months, I have been messing around with a little EDF that I call the Fishbed Foamy Mig-21. I had purchased an EDF kit last year that was built out of Depron and it used a 50mm fan set-up. I was very disappointed at the flying characteristics of that little bird. It just wasn't very much fun to fly. It tended to snap in tight turns and it wouldn't fly inverted at all. So. I decided to see what I could come up with. I designed and drew a Mig 21 to fit the fan in CAD. Then I built a little balsa toss model to verify the CG and incidence. I had little wire hinges on the elevators for adjustment...The thing literally "flew off the building board"! In fact, it would glide at least 50 yards with a good toss! I built the full-size version out of 6mm Depron and it flies GREAT! It's fast, it turns tight, it does really good extreme high AOA flight and most surprising of all, it flies very well inverted and can do OUTSIDE LOOPS! I have caught it in my hand on landing several times, but most of the time I "Harrier land" it at the flying field with no forward motion. I like the thing so much that my flying buddy have taking everyones advice and we have decided to kit it. We have formed a company, Jets N Stuff to market it. Check it out at www.jetsnstuff.com. We have completed the initial production run and we are ready to ship.

Tailwinds,

John

I just realized that there aren't any specs for the Mig on the site. So here they are:

Typical weight is 13.5 oz. with a Spektrum AR 6100 RX, Hitec Hs-56 servos and a Tanic 3S-1760 battery. The length is 34.8" and the wing span is 20.6"

The Mig is powered by a Himax EPF-50 fan. This fan comes assembled, dynamically balanced, ready to run from the factory with a HB 2410-4100 brushless motor.
