Best 480 size motor?

What's the best/hottest Speed 480 size motor for an edf. Specifcally the Minifan 480? I am building a Minx 400 which will eventually go brushless, but for now I'd like to put a good speed 480 brushed motor in it.

Help!

Thanks in advance,
Eric

The Fun 480 series of motors are the best brushless from what I've heard. I can't say which is the best because that depends on the airplane. Here is a spreadsheet of their performances though...

Fun Series Spreadsheet....... Be patient on loading..

For use in a fan : the Graupner 480 BB Race. No doubt about it.

The 480 BB Race (not the 480 BB, which has a much lower performance, the 480 BB Race has a black can, the 480 BB a bare metal can) and the AP 29L are in a completely different class. The AP29L is for planes between 0.7kg to 1.2 kg (i think this is 23oz to 2lb 7oz), the 480 BB Race for 0.8 kg (27oz) and less.

For the AP29L, you'll need at least CP1300 cells, while the 480 can be used with 500AR, 600AE or 700AR cells.

To make a long story short, the 480 BB Race is more suited for smaller applications (it's a lot lighter then the AP29L). My buddy flies a pampa-like jet of his own design using the cheap Rojet and the 480 BB Race on 7x700 AR cells and it flies like a dream. Much better then my T-33 with the AP-29L used to (i'm flying it now with a Hacker B-40 7L, what a difference)

There is no Graupner 480 BB, only a 480 Race BB, a 480 Race (non BB) and also a regular 480 (also non BB). For a some time (in the pre-brushless days) the German edf'ers actually had a preference for the regular 480 race since it's less hot (lower KV):

The Kyosho AP29L is a bigger can motor with bigger ferrite magnets, thus more power (up to ca. 250 Watts). It is the best one of the lot, max eff around 72%. Fitting it in the MF480 requires some slight modification.

All above motors are made by the same manufacturer in Japan, Sagami. They all have comparable max efficiencies (around 64%). They have all been made completely obsolete by the new $60 Mega ACn16's.
