Wow

As you probably know we are flying in Holland a national championship F3K mini. These are DLG's with a wingspan up to 1 meter.
http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=763670
Last Sunday we had the second round in this competition. My son decided to fly in the mini-class. We had some Apogee's and Ofa's but you know that after a while you think you need something else although there isn't a direct reason for it. You've got planes enough.
In the week before the competition I build the Mimi. Very simple to build. The balsa I got from the store was a little heavy so I decided to make some holes in the wing. This reduced the weight by 15 grams. The complete plane weights now 177 gram

Last Saturday we made the maiden. One day before competition. Wow what a difference . Start height easy over 40 meters. Better handling then the Apogee. Much better in winds over 3 bft then the Ofa.

On the competitionday it was rainy and a lot wind 4Bft. We added lead up to 210 gram. No problem. The Mimi did fine and finished on 4th place just behind all the mini's with carbon fuselage and molded wings.

Its the 7th mini we have and the best plane off all.
Thanx Frans for the design

Go to http://66.163.168.225/babelfish/tran...57-post14.html and download them directly. The site will load slowly, it's going through a Babelfish translation for those of us who don't read Dutch.
http://babelfish.yahoo.com/translate...rUrl=Translate will get you to the main discussion thread, I believe.

Sorry to hear that E-mails are getting bounched back.
You can use the drawings that Dorsal "found" but there old en somewhat simple.
If you have problems getting an E-mail to mail@F3K.nl send your request to

MiMi.plans@kpnplanet.nl

(We won't make the plans direct downloadable, we like to keep some track of where the plans are going, just out of interest)

Regards

Hello,

There is an english version available now of the MiMi plan.

Have anybody build a MiMi jet and flown it?
I am interested in your findings.

Frans,
I was in the process of drawing up my own solid balsa winged DLG to compliment my Apogee, but may not need to now! I think with the right balsa and attention to detail this model can compete right up there with a composite bird. I wil be sending you an E-mail for the english translation. Very nice!

Hello Jim,

I have recently build a mini-dlg with bagged wings.
Must say it flies very nice but totally diffent to the Mimi.
The mimi is more forgiving and easy to fly.
Yes the bagged wing lanches higher by several meters, feet, yards or what ever, but the Mimi can hold it's own.
Weight wise the Mimi can handle quite some balast.
This is very handy in windy conditions.
You can balast it to 200 grams with no problem.
If you build it light you will end up with a weight of approx 120-130 grams.
Normally i fly my mimi at 165 grams.
This weight seems to give a good allround weight for everyday flying.
An advantage of a heavier model is launch height.
I never measured it but i estimate that launch heights of 35 meter are very common.

Jim, where are you buying your contest balsa? I would think the wing would require the 3/8" thickness. Peck Polymers seems to be out of the C-grain. Lone Star Balsa is still out of business, it appears...

3/8" = 9.525 mm.
The root rib has a maximum thickness of 10.6 mm.
So 1/2" for the D-box of the inner sections would be a good choice.
To give an idea.
A wing made out of balsa that weighs 110 gram per 12x100x1000mm plank will weigh ± 70gram.
