Grand Prize Competition and Cut, spray, peel and stick.
Hi Guys,
Moving onwards and upwards. I tidied up the paint overspray on the Walrus and include a short demo of "Decals for Dummies" that's me by the way. Also a grand prize for the lucky winner of the "Spot my coffe cup competition" awaits. To enter, simply email me a ten pound note and I'll divide up the proceeds to a good cause, remember X marks the spot. Closeing date for entries 03 April, no money back, guaranteed. I am rubbish at painting and find this an easy way to add some colour to your model, so long as it has Roundels, use colour to suite the nationality. Decide on the size you want and using a compass cutter, cut out from self adhesive Doculam plastic, stick them plastic side up on a board and paint them, allow them to dry completely, then simply peel off and stick in the right order and position. You could use this technique for any graphic you care for. Have fun, but safety first these things are very sharp, I know. regds to all, Al

great ! i see the coffe cup too
what happened to teh sloped fairing in front of the windscreens ? (mental not to selfe shut up and make it better ya nagging pseudo scale nerd )i really like your decals technique... how does it stand up to water ? i`ll have to try it if it works well as my decals start peeling off and rolling when subjected to too much spray... don`t want that with my big marlin! (doculam should be easy enoug to get here too |

We have a Winner! Al has an early Bath! Film at eleven.
Hi MB,Guys,
Congratulations MB you are the winner!. The Grand Prize, "A burial at sea with the woman of your choice!" My mate Wolfgang dropped in this afternoon and as the Walrus was ready we attempted to fly her, it was a little windy and very thermic, but I think my c/g was too aft. After three hand launches and very squirrely handling we gave up with an undamaged model.....later I thought I would get some video of the water trials in the pool, well all was good untill I was skiping about at speed and I turned her over by digging the left wing in. Just downloading the video, so it will be a few hours till I can post it on line. I'm off to read the thread on water proofing your radio after I get dried. Cheers mates. regards to all, Al

Very nice, Sir! It looks like you got the grand price yourself, a big shiny thing with nice decals on it!
Yup, those wing floats really stops it cold if given half a chance during the take off run! Forgot to say that... This type of plane really needs a lot of rudder both on the water and in the air, since it does not have the propeller "pulling" it into the turn. Did it step up from the water alright? Or was the pool to short? Thought you had plenty of lochs in old Scotland? Happy landings! Johan |

How not to taxy, Search and Rescue for beginers.
Hi Guys,
Sorry for the delay, I must have connected to youtube via "Sputnik." the original one! The taxying was going Ok, turns very well with the little rudder, even better with high throttle settings, as you would expect. Rising up onto the plane seems slow, especially compared to the puddle twin with her more flat bottom. A real drag meister with the power off. Local wind was northerly, looking into the video at time of digging in the left float. I should have seen it coming, but hey, how else do you reinforce the learning moment? I should have thought to put the helmetcam facing the pool to see the rescue itself, hahaha. Johny Weismuller eat your heart out. My radio is drying out so I won't test it till tomorrow, she'll be right. Enjoy the videoette. BTW there is only one Walrus in the video despite what you may think. cheers mates.regards to all, Al
L/D, Aye we have plenty of Lochs at home, she comes up to the step OK but I was not trying for take off, past sunset, will get on it soon as my radio is working. Al. |

Walrus Flys !
Hi Guys,
Radio dried out ok over night, left it in the sun for an hour this morning and gave it a good check out. Took her over to the sports pitch for another attempt. The Walrus flys ok, half power and hand launch into 10kt breeze, nice and steady, looked real good climbing out to 100ft, Rudder still powerful even on reduced throws, turns tended to be ongoing, sort of spiral instability, or could be the "fly by wire" stings have too much slack, (I will redo the rudder hinge) did a left hand circuit and long approach with 50% power, it stops quick on the grass and I wacked off the water rudder, ho hum. 7/10. I would recomend this plan with minimum changes to keep weight low, looks like this Walrus has lots of blubber on board as it is 440gram! I would definately build another one, but not this week. Looking forward to more flying and fettling to get her right, and flying in calmer conditions, she deserves it. Cheers mates, regards to all, Al

In the Prop Shop
Hi Guys,
In the workshop for the previously mentioned jobs, I was playing around to get more power through the motor using my Watts Up meter, I doubled up the props as per full size on some gash GWS I had, results were looking good. I have doubled up my mystery 7x?? prop (most watts) and am waiting for the slow metal filled epoxy to kick off, have to go to work now so will test it laters. regd's to all, Al

The Next Flight!, Walrus Videoette. Al keeps dry!
Hi Guys,
Thank you John NZ, I'm on back shift at work this week so was up early to catch good flying weather. After measuring this and that I found a normal prop, APC 7x5, that with a bit of adjustment spins without clattering anything, phew, and gives the grunt to fly with Gusto, (famous Italian seaplane pilot) not to be confused with aah Bisto, a very British Gravy mix. Rudder has new hinge to minimise slack in string.Any way, here for your perusal is a videoette in classic 1930's genre, remember it's all for Fun
regards to all, Al

Welcome Depron fairy!
Hi MB, Guys,
Everyone more than welcome to join in and add any comment, info and build stuff. I'm more of an Elf type, so my wife tells me, and she is my wee strawberry fairy. Ahem! Managed to get the Walrus off the pool today and back in too! Landing was rather untidy, I'll have to move the motor side thrust some more, she still rolls hard right full power so I trim full left then on power reduction it's back over with right rudder and trim, a bit like a one legged man at an arse kicking competition? Vid 1 of 3 today, to follow when Sputnik allows. regards to all, Al

Nice build, the Walrus is one of those planes that compensate their ugliness with a certain endearing je ne sais quoi.
