Not as convenient, but the following should work:

Just connect a cutting wire instead of the motor, set the amp to 4A, and slowly work your way up at the voltage setting, until you have the desired wire temperature.
The max. voltage of 15V would limit the wire length to 0.6m, though, at least with the type of wire I use.

Junsi, concerning the manual:
At the program flow chart, how about putting little numbers under each display image, which refer to the page number of the manual, where this feature is described in detail?

For example, put a "18" under the PB charge display images, so one would see directly, that one has to go to page 18 in the manual to find the explanations.

Cheers,

Julez
Hello Julez,
Thanks!
As for the putting little numbers under each display image , We just misundestood your meaning , we will add the page number to the under images of flow chart. Thanks!
We really appreciate this valuable idea, it's really a convenient way.

Thanks,
Junsi

Junsi I think you might have misunderstood Julez's suggestion. I think he just meant that in the manual you could place a little page number reference below each drawing of the LCD in the flowchart.

Any idea on what firmware is on the ones stocked at HC? Not that it matters, as i bought a TTL board from futurelec anyway

Rock on Junsi - nice list of updates in the release notes and I love how credit is given to the originator. This soon to be legendary series of chargers is destined to become the model that others mimic and aspire to be, given this level of direct and immediate user feedback.

Manufacturer/engineer direct to consumer/hobbyist - isn't it wonderful!

I can almost smell the foam burning - mmmmm-mmmmm! The first charger with integrated foam cut mode, I believe you can take some credit for that one too Julian.

Hm, thanks

*Cough* - I prefer wearing a gas mask while cutting

Anyhow, I wonder why noone has thought earlier of this. A computer charger can do everything a normal foam cutting power supply can do, too, only better.

Updating port ?

I already have the 1010b but what is the little USB port for on the side? Is it possible or necessary to update the charger with latest software or what? I am a little confused, as there are a lot of things which seem to have been incorporated into it since its first release, and these seem to keep occuring almost daily - but how will I know whether these are active in my particular model. It says ver3.04. when first booting up, and the manual is on a disk which came with it. TYIA

The punch out for the USB port is intended for future versions.

You can update the charger with a little soldering and a USB / TTL converter.
Instructions are here, and in some other postings:
