I searched around to verify my recollection from years ago, and salt bath seems to be a myth or at least not needed...do any manufacturers recommend doing so? Nobody recommends salt for laptop or other lithium batteries either...

Discharging is probably a good idea, and I suppose salt water might discharge them (if the tabs don't corrode off first). If you go through the trouble of salt water, spend another few minutes and measure the voltage before discarding them, if you're worried about it.

I guess any shorting under safe conditions would have the same, desirable result: a battery without voltage potential.

But doing it with salt water takes care of both shorting and keeping it from catching fire (water...) so this might be why it's suggested.

A laptop battery is much harder to be punctured and have its plates shorted, e.g. while transferred to the disposal facility. Both the pack's hard plastic case and the cells' metal cases would have to be compromised. A lipo cell (even a soft pack) is much easier to get damaged...

That's just my view, I don't know if it's recommended by manufacturers or the optimum way to dispose of them but I do it..

Fresh water from a tap will not short out DC batteries. Add salt and it acts as an electrolyte. This will discharge lipos overnight DEAD FLAT so you can put them in the garbage safely. The issue is the potential of shorting out and starting a fire. Just think about it, a dump full of methane gas and a lipo being run over by an earth mover. Hold on to your hard hat.................

Or, even you personal garbage might ignite under the right circumstances.

I use this principal in gold plating with salt and water, plus other secret ingredients, only in reverse, sort off.

My mistake here, I did mean oz/sqft. Sorry for the confusion, definitly not floaty at 2 oz/ sqin.

Here's my Underball, Jetball and Nutball II.
Underball is 3mm Depron. Jetball is two layers of foam board laminated with 3M77. Nutball is 9mm EPP. Got two more varients under construction which I'll post if they fly.

Yeah... built that and we're just getting started here. Check out my channel - I'll be uploading a part 2 vid from this past Friday of the Imp combat soon. Actually, there's Imp vs. Imp and Imp vs. Mustang! Quite a hoot. Part 1 is already there.
