Here's our rather chunky mini Dachshund Millie. While I'm on the computer, she pesters me until I put her on my lap, where she promptly falls asleep. Interesting note- her name is short for Millinium. She was born at midnight Dec.31,1999 or Jan.1,2000??

My Eskimo is under my chair every now and then when I'm on the computer, but he's seldom a pest---.

And he likes to go outside in the snow a lot---.

Alice always has to help - takes much longer to a simple task. She also has a bad habit of chewing up stripwood or styrene strips. Two of them insist that they are involved in all aspects of model building!

Bob Big, it's understood that you didn't pose your cat on that little shelf, and that the cat in the boat hull wasn't a setup either---.

You can't get a kitty do do ANYTHING you want them to---.

I have two shop assists, but luckily neither gets too excited and attacks my stuff.

The dog will chase my cars and trucks though when he feels like it.

No pics of the cat assisting but here's two of Buddy Dog.

Helping me inspect a delivery in his kennel room:

And sitting on "his" couch in the workshop supervising for correct procedures:

Noting is safe with our British shorthair while our white cat seems content to let the days pass by. He has already shown a fondness for periscopes & my 1/200 Sovremenny; yesterday I found some parts missing to my PT-109...

My shipyard watch dogs. Real vicious as the older one ( Kelsey) will bark you to death until you give him attention. The younger one ---well he will live up to his name--Wizzer. Both dogs like to sit by me when I work in the house. In the shop--not allowed at this point--safety first ( various chemicles that could do harm at their level).

This here is Cody. AKA Fat Sausage Dog or aka Bed Hog Dog. Spoiled rotten and was not gifted too much in the common sense department. He is great with the kids and friends and family and that is the most important thing. Nothing like a good pet in your life! Cody is a very good spoiled Fat Sausage Dog for sure.

Here's my dog. She's not much of a shop dog, but if Mom goes in she'll follow. She'll chase just about anything RC (except boats ) but only for a short time. If she is with me she usually is just slowing me down by sleeping on one arm.

Patches the Flying Cat

Here's one from the archives that involved one of our earlier cats when we were in our Shanghai apartment. The following text along with the accompanying photos are from an email I sent out May 2005.

My first request is that no one calls the local chapter of the SPCA to report this.

One of our cats must have been watching Bullwinkle this weekend & decided he wanted to emulate Rocky the Flying Squirrel. Patches, our somewhat challenged, yet loving orange & white Shanghainese, somehow got past the window screen in the apartment's "casa de gato" yesterday morning before breakfast & discovered what it was like to free fall 11 stories to the courtyard below. Luckily for him, his outward trajectory - influenced, no doubt, by the flailing of paws & his excessively long tail - placed him directly in line towards a shrub 35 meters below which absorbed the bulk of the impact. If that hadn't occurred, I'm sure this photo montage would not coming to your mailbox as it is.

After searching all over the apartment & finding we were missing one of the cats, my worst fears were realized after I looked out the window. I immediately headed down the elevator with a bath towel expecting the very worst. As it was, I turned the corner & found Patches staring at me, in shock & trying to hide in the corner next to the building beside the bush that saved his life.

As soon as I approached him, he let out a loud YEOW! & ran for cover which was the best thing I could hope for since he exhibited no signs of a broken limb or other trauma. The doctor who checked him said he appears to be OK, is just in a state of shock, & will probably come out of this with no lasting side effects aside from a fear of heights. He's gingerly getting around the house & has already regained his notorious appetite, so at least it appears he is on the mend. I must say, they build damn good cats here in China!

After being away from Shanghai for the past two weeks, I don't think I can stand to have anymore excitement like this to come home to!!

I have more to say but think it's best that I close with several quotes I found on the Hokey Smoke! Rocky & Bullwinkle website: http://bullwinkle.toonzone.net/rocky.htm

Rocky: "Hey Bullwinkle, we're in real trouble now!"
Bullwinkle: "Oh good, Rocky! I hate that artificial kind!"
Rocky: "There has already been two attempts on your life."
Bullwinkle: "Don't worry, we'll be renewed."

I left out the photo showing a huge pile of shte that Patches left beside the building. To this day, I'm not sure it that landed after he hit the bush or was deposited after the fact...

Is it a sheep?

This is what you get when you cross a part Golden Retriever part Black Lab mom with a part Black Lab and part Border Collie dad. Most people say she looks like a sheep. Her name is Cinder.
When I take her to the flea market with me she loves meeting the people and especially the kids and other dogs but if she gets tired of that or if it's cold she wants to be put into the truck where she can snooze on a soft seat. She is very friendly but don't mess with my truck if she is in it. You will hear about it promply.
She loves to snooze right under my feet when I'm working on a boat and if a part drops on the floor it is instantly eaten. Plastic, wood or metal doesn't matter. If she gets to it first it's gone. Ha! Pete

Brandi is being a ham......

I tell everyone that she can count, I put 4 jelly beans in my pocket, then gave her 3 of them, she knew there was one more and when she got that she trotted off knowing there were no more treats from me then.

herrmill, the high fall often is better than a lower one(2-3 stories) seems to give the cat time to flatten out and ride the air like rocky. just glad every-one is fine, ps I have six of the monsters....I still believe thats cats can control the gravity in thier general area, that why a six pound cat can lay on your lap and feel like twelve pounds when its doesn't want you to get up...

What do you do when your cat weighs 25lbs?

My older cat who has since gone to the happy hunting ground used weigh that much and like you said when she did not want to be moved I don't think god could have gotten the job done.

some pics of my rehabbed ferel cat "smokey razorclaw birdsnatcher" he was living wild, but he was very good at it...when he's out of his kennel the local birds seem to station a noisey wren above him at all times, the squirrels all head for the thin branches in the tree tops.. he's sizing up the "prey" doesn't understand that he is only 16lbs of cat...

Had two tomcats for years; Ming the merciless (watch the old flash gordon movie) who weighed north of 18 pounds and who's great idea of a great mornings exercise was to walk into the living room and work out on my sleeping Australian Shepard. The Shepard (blue healer in local parlance) would respond by waiting till he was asleep on the window sill (recharging in the sun) and sneak up on him and barking, causing him to levitate and try to fly across the room! both of them must have thought that was great fun they did to each other for over a decade!
His son, Sailor (never walked a straight line in his life and always looked like he was on way home from liberty) was raised with the dogs, when they would chase he run just a far as he was going to run, then would do his best imitation of a mountain lion and stand there challenging anyone to try him on. He was also famous for jumping in through the window screens bringing home 'presents' Usually a dead blue jay, always went out through the dog/cat door and if he wasn't bringing anything home would use the door but not loaded with the bird(s)?

Our pet Beagle, "Toni", had to be put down this morning.

She was over 17 years old, but had kidney failure and in the last several weeks her health went downhill fast. Yesterday was the turning point, and today we made the decision to put her suffering to an end.

These photos were taken 4 months ago. She lost 1/3 of her weight since then.

R.I.P., our gentle friend......

Our hearts go out to ya man....we put one of ours down last year and it's a really hard thing to do. Toni is in a good place now playing with our Amp Dog, and has no more pain, green grass and an endless supply of bones to chew on.

Any one that has had to do the same thing knows your pain, my deepest sympathies go to Sir, just remembering having to do the same thing with my Tenzing brought tears to my eyes.

Sorry to hear that Tom. Had the same problem with a big 18 lb ''Morris'' Tabby some time ago. He went down to 8 lbs. We had him for 19 years. It's difficult as they are indeed part of the family.

Tom; Sorry to hear about Toni. I've had to do the same thing and it's not the easiest day you'll ever have. However it's the right thing to do when the time comes and at least you had the mercy for the dog to do it.
We get past these things but we never forget the wonderful pet that we were allowed to care for. Pete

Thanks everyone. My wife just read these and appreciated your thoughts a lot.

This is the 4th dog for me, and the 3rd dog for my wife that we have had to make that hard decision for over the years. It doesn't ever get any easier.

Tom, so sorry to hear of you and your wifes loss. I am very close to my Millie and I often think of how upset I'll be when it comes time to say goodbye. Take care and remember the good times you had together.

When your pet is old and sick, you don't really have the heart to have them put down, but it's the kindest thing you can do---.

Tom,

So sorry to hear of your loss of Toni. Having seen pictures of her on here before you could tell that she was well taken care of and loved very much. Having had to put down several pets in the past, like you said... it doesn't get any easier.

My sympathies to you both,
Phil

Thanks everyone, this is very nice the outpouring of sympathy.

It is a crushing decision to have to make. But we reconcile it by knowing the suffering of a sick pet has ended.

The only pet my wife and I have left is our beloved Norwegian cat, Pudgy. He is 16 years old, and thankfully seems very healthy and active still.

It is going to absolutely crush me when his day comes...

Tom,
Iím sorry to hear of your loss, my sympathies to you both.
When I lost my cat Morris a few years ago I had tears in my eyes going to, and coming home from the vet. I thought I would never get another pet. My brotherís cat had kittens about 2 years ago and I couldnít help myself. Now I have 2 monsters, but I love them both.

Very sorry to hear of your family's loss, Tom. As has been noted here, it's never easy to let them go, but sometimes it's the only thing to do. One of life's really hard moments, but you have unforgettable memories - and hopefully pictures - of them.
