Patches the Flying Cat
Here's one from the archives that involved one of our earlier cats when we were in our Shanghai apartment. The following text along with the accompanying photos are from an email I sent out May 2005.
My first request is that no one calls the local chapter of the SPCA to report this. One of our cats must have been watching Bullwinkle this weekend & decided he wanted to emulate Rocky the Flying Squirrel. Patches, our somewhat challenged, yet loving orange & white Shanghainese, somehow got past the window screen in the apartment's "casa de gato" yesterday morning before breakfast & discovered what it was like to free fall 11 stories to the courtyard below. Luckily for him, his outward trajectory - influenced, no doubt, by the flailing of paws & his excessively long tail - placed him directly in line towards a shrub 35 meters below which absorbed the bulk of the impact. If that hadn't occurred, I'm sure this photo montage would not coming to your mailbox as it is. After searching all over the apartment & finding we were missing one of the cats, my worst fears were realized after I looked out the window. I immediately headed down the elevator with a bath towel expecting the very worst. As it was, I turned the corner & found Patches staring at me, in shock & trying to hide in the corner next to the building beside the bush that saved his life. As soon as I approached him, he let out a loud YEOW! & ran for cover which was the best thing I could hope for since he exhibited no signs of a broken limb or other trauma. The doctor who checked him said he appears to be OK, is just in a state of shock, & will probably come out of this with no lasting side effects aside from a fear of heights. He's gingerly getting around the house & has already regained his notorious appetite, so at least it appears he is on the mend. I must say, they build damn good cats here in China! After being away from Shanghai for the past two weeks, I don't think I can stand to have anymore excitement like this to come home to!! I have more to say but think it's best that I close with several quotes I found on the Hokey Smoke! Rocky & Bullwinkle website: http://bullwinkle.toonzone.net/rocky.htm Rocky: "Hey Bullwinkle, we're in real trouble now!" Bullwinkle: "Oh good, Rocky! I hate that artificial kind!" Rocky: "There has already been two attempts on your life." Bullwinkle: "Don't worry, we'll be renewed." I left out the photo showing a huge pile of sh te that Patches left beside the building. To this day, I'm not sure it that landed after he hit the bush or was deposited after the fact...Chuck

Is it a sheep?
This is what you get when you cross a part Golden Retriever part Black Lab mom with a part Black Lab and part Border Collie dad. Most people say she looks like a sheep. Her name is Cinder.
When I take her to the flea market with me she loves meeting the people and especially the kids and other dogs but if she gets tired of that or if it's cold she wants to be put into the truck where she can snooze on a soft seat. She is very friendly but don't mess with my truck if she is in it. You will hear about it promply. She loves to snooze right under my feet when I'm working on a boat and if a part drops on the floor it is instantly eaten. Plastic, wood or metal doesn't matter. If she gets to it first it's gone. Ha! herrmill, the high fall often is better than a lower one(2-3 stories) seems to give the cat time to flatten out and ride the air like rocky. just glad every-one is fine, ps I have six of the monsters....I still believe thats cats can control the gravity in thier general area, that why a six pound cat can lay on your lap and feel like twelve pounds when its doesn't want you to get up...

some pics of my rehabbed ferel cat "smokey razorclaw birdsnatcher" he was living wild, but he was very good at it...when he's out of his kennel the local birds seem to station a noisey wren above him at all times, the squirrels all head for the thin branches in the tree tops.. he's sizing up the "prey" doesn't understand that he is only 16lbs of cat...

Had two tomcats for years; Ming the merciless (watch the old flash gordon movie) who weighed north of 18 pounds and who's great idea of a great mornings exercise was to walk into the living room and work out on my sleeping Australian Shepard. The Shepard (blue healer in local parlance) would respond by waiting till he was asleep on the window sill (recharging in the sun) and sneak up on him and barking, causing him to levitate and try to fly across the room! both of them must have thought that was great fun they did to each other for over a decade!
His son, Sailor (never walked a straight line in his life and always looked like he was on way home from liberty) was raised with the dogs, when they would chase he run just a far as he was going to run, then would do his best imitation of a mountain lion and stand there challenging anyone to try him on. He was also famous for jumping in through the window screens bringing home 'presents' Usually a dead blue jay, always went out through the dog/cat door and if he wasn't bringing anything home would use the door but not loaded with the bird(s)? Our pet Beagle, "Toni", had to be put down this morning.
She was over 17 years old, but had kidney failure and in the last several weeks her health went downhill fast. Yesterday was the turning point, and today we made the decision to put her suffering to an end. These photos were taken 4 months ago. She lost 1/3 of her weight since then. R.I.P., our gentle friend...... |

Tom; Sorry to hear about Toni. I've had to do the same thing and it's not the easiest day you'll ever have. However it's the right thing to do when the time comes and at least you had the mercy for the dog to do it.
We get past these things but we never forget the wonderful pet that we were allowed to care for. Pete |

Tom,
So sorry to hear of your loss of Toni. Having seen pictures of her on here before you could tell that she was well taken care of and loved very much. Having had to put down several pets in the past, like you said... it doesn't get any easier. My sympathies to you both, Phil |

Thanks everyone, this is very nice the outpouring of sympathy.
It is a crushing decision to have to make. But we reconcile it by knowing the suffering of a sick pet has ended. The only pet my wife and I have left is our beloved Norwegian cat, Pudgy. He is 16 years old, and thankfully seems very healthy and active still. It is going to absolutely crush me when his day comes...

Tom,
I’m sorry to hear of your loss, my sympathies to you both. When I lost my cat Morris a few years ago I had tears in my eyes going to, and coming home from the vet. I thought I would never get another pet. My brother’s cat had kittens about 2 years ago and I couldn’t help myself. Now I have 2 monsters, but I love them both. Don M. |

Very sorry to hear of your family's loss, Tom. As has been noted here, it's never easy to let them go, but sometimes it's the only thing to do. One of life's really hard moments, but you have unforgettable memories - and hopefully pictures - of them.
