Good shots Schrott. Why do you keep him tied up? Doesn't seem like he'd stray too far out in the boonies like you are.
Ahhha! I see a poured footer there. Whatcha building now? Any snow yet?
Thinkin' about my 'Got Snow' thread again. We're having a cold spell here today. It's down to 77 degrees.
Dumpster looks like he's part wolf. Good dog! Pete

He ain't tied up Pete, thats an old Rope his favoured toy.
I figure Dumpster got some Aussie and Lab in him, he loves to swim, is a great hunter, rabbits, squirls and rodents, gets himself once or twice a day a little snack, pays great attention, you call him he comes emidiately .
Naturally as a 2 year old full of unwasted energy, but when we are in the company he is quiet and just waits for going home time.

Perfect.

I am building again, Wintergarten, so I can mowe grass in the winter and sit in my lawn chair with a drink and watch the snow coming down.

No snow jet but it snowed in the High Country the last 2 days, that is 4 weeks earlier than last year, we might get a real winter, need it badly, Mc Phee is 60 feet down, looks horrible.
Will do my trip to Trout Lake this weekend, the colours are spectacular, I did it last year End of October.
69 degree, might get to 75 and in the lower 40 at night, geting cold

dumpster sure looks likes the pure joy of being a dog..(wish I had the time and space a dog needs) on another note one of my mothers friend of a friend was very sad at the loss of her very old male cat,,, the friend brought her out to the house and the big footed poly black young cat worked his magic..(he was so convincing that a younger kitten went home also)

last night I was clipping Cinders toe ails and I got one too close to the quick while she was fighting me. Of course it started to bleed a bit but I didn't think anything of it until I spoteed the blood trail in my carpet. I bandaged the foot twice and she tore off the bandage both times. So I figured she would take care of it herself and I went to bed. This morning when I got up and went to the living room the carpet looked like the site of the chainsaw massacre. There was blood every place she stepped all night long and it isn't coming out.
However Cinder is fine this morning and the bleeding has stopped and she is fit as a fiddle. Now I'm wondering if my insurance will cover the carpet replacement as that's what it's looking like at the moment. What a mess.
So don't clip those nails too close guys. Could really cost ya. Pete

Glad CINDER is OK.
It seems like CINDER owes you one, maybe just a small skin penetrating bite across the thumb joint.
This may serve notice that the poor "dumb" animal was trying to tell her "smart" human that he was not qualified.

But on the more serious side:
Pete, we all know how it must hurt you to injure your companion. You might look into purchasing a nail grinder. The nail grinder is much like a DREMEL,with a guard, just for trimming pet nails. The guard keeps you from trimming too close.
We don't have one,but I've seen them.
( Sir TANK gets his "work" done at Pet Smart ) I'm not qualified.

pete, you got it easy only 18-20 to trim and dogs are so much more forgiving, 26 on the yeti monster, 18 each on the other three in the house, smokey outside gets to keep his points(I get to keep my blood in my veins) try some oxy stuff, it works great on organic stains, but you might have to do the entire room because it will leave clean spots.. time for the rug doctor anyways..

My dogs nails are black, so it is really difficult to know where the quick is. I nipped it once, and that was a bummer. Now, I just cut the very point off, just a smidgen. I do not try to 'trim' the nails like you would do to yourself, by cutting them way back.

I have seen that Dremel idea and I like it. In the mean time I use my wifes old emory boards as well as some 280 grit wet/dry and finish up by sanding the nail tips for a while. Costs lots of dog treats to get cooperation.

Mr. Cat is not allowed outdoors ( small dogs and kids turn up missing ), his nails do not get the normal "wear" that outdoor animals do.

If allowed to grow very long, they catch in the carpet ( he can pull hard and hurt himself ), when he cleans his face with front paws after eating the longs dew claws can cut/scrape the eye lid, better for all if maintained.

The trimming is carefully done.

I've been trimming my dogs nails for thirty years and have never once hit into the quick. This time she was not cooperating and pushed her foot out just when i was going to clip the nail. In doing that she pushed her nail into the clipper a bit too far just when I squeezed the handles and I just nicked the quick. I never saw so much blood in my life but it came out very slow over a period of time. She's ok now. No doubt that toe is a bit sore but she will live.
Actually your supposed to cut the nails from under the paw at a 45 degree angle to the paw. However with the dew claws you have to just guess at it.I was ok till she moved her leg. Live and learn. pete

If you don't have any Quik Stop then dab some flour on the nail to stop the bleeding.

we used to put those on tinker our psycho cat, she was putting holes in the other cats (she had lots of issues besides an instant hate of me) we would get the bright pink ones and she would then try to hide them from the other cats, it did break her of lashing out with claws.. now the cats just get the sharp tips nipped off, I don't need a free acupucture session when they jump up in my lap..

When I got back from the company today and turned on the dirt road which leads to my home, I saw this little sucker run across the road.
I live way out, little dogs do not survive out here, they just do not exist.
So I stoped and had a look. A tray of dog food, empty except for scraps, a tray of water, half full and about 2 days worth of tracks..
First I tried to call him, no chance he was scared and agressive. So I let Dumpster out and tried to get him to come, no way.
So I drove to the house got some bacon and a beer and than went back.
I should have taken 2 beers, it took 2 hours to finally have him eat the bacon out of my hand and give me a chance to grab him behind his neck.
He is very scared and defenciv, biting.
So I carried him dangling from his neck, trying to bite my hand, climb the barbwire fence and than rather unceremoniasly dumped him into my van and drove home.

Some kinde Jack Russel thing. All teeth, Piranyana looking like a dog.

At home I god the dog carrier out, got a towel, threw it over him and stuffed him in the carrier..
He loved the food he got.

Sidewalk, my Old Lady is not to happy, Dumpster sits in front of the cage, what is that, a new toy ?

I guess I got a new family member.

Gone take a few weeks to rehab him. Vet needs to check him out.

Since I found him under an Oak Brush, I will call him Oak Brush.

I had a Roadside, great little Bitch, so that name is already taken.

New family member, I guess

Way to go Schrott!

I got home today from some errands, and walked into the living room and see a box torn up, a bottle of epoxy resin torn open, a big wet spot of epoxy on the living room carpet, and the bottle of hardener with teeth marks in it.

Oh crap, I thought. She has ingested some resin for sure. Off to the veterinary hospital.

2.5 hours and $206 bucks later, we are back home with some medicine I have to give her twice a day for 5 days. She dodged a bullet. If she had bitten through and ingested the hardener, she might be gone by now.

The stuff was an old box of coating used on paintings and such, that my wife had bought at the craft store. It's called "Ultra-Glo" and I later looked it up on the internet. The MSDS tells the story.

My wife doesn't remember where she had put that box, but Freckles found it when we were not home and she got bored....

Yaiks Tom, that girl got lucky, this time.

Animals all way surprise, how fast they are able to adjust, if allowed.
Oak is 91/2 shoe size, besides beeing starved and probably wormy, healthy as it goes.
Sidewalk is as always a little reserved, but well she is 15 and earned that right. He likes my going to the pond toolbox. So today after a wonderfull day of rain, I graded my road. I put a towel in the toolbox , stuffed him in it and took him with me. He sleped the next 3 hours in the tool box at my feet on the tracktor.
I put one of Dumpsters baby harnesses on him so I can grab him, outside he has rope attached to it so I can easily stop him from doing stupid things.
He is so friking small they I have to watch my step.

Had to hold onto Ian MacClaw until Sunday as his new family was unable to retrieve him until then. I handed him over to the girl that was adopting him and he placed his paws on her chest and looked up at her and licked her nose.
She started to cry. I think he has found a good forever home.

get a very large carrier and let them get used to it(beds, feeding, litter box) this will be like moving part of the house with them.. once in the new place, keep them in room a with the carrier untill things get settled, some blankets and things that they are used too , not washed can help them adjust to the new place..

KEY ADVICE there, as many known by smell objects as possible in various rooms/areas in the new house, Cats are territorial, upon release each room/area will be inspected for Any sign of other Cats.

Hopefully the new domain will be free of animal smells.

If you have known posessions in those areas, the new owner should quickly relax, eat, clean up and sleep after a thorough investigation.

Thanks Guys, I have arrange the borrow of a large pet carrier that they both will fit in for two weeks before the move and will follow the other suggestions which the Vet had finally suggested to once he finally got back to me. It is going to be interesting as we will be moving from a one story bungalow to a 1 1/2 story house.
Regards,
Gerald.

Yes and No, lets say he is very squirly.
Dumpster and Sidewalk have taken him in. My 22 year old cat and him are a minor problem, teaching him that Mustard is not his toy and absolut of limits, needs at times reinforcement and that brakes naturally any ties for a day, at the most.
Naturally a Ranch is a very scary place and at times I have to be very fast to prevent him geting killed.
Right now Dump and Oak are under my desk and Oak loves my big toe scratching his belly.

It will take time, but in year, he will be mentaly healthy.
He follows Dumpster and Sidewalk like s.... on stink and they teach him.
Most important he got the feeding routine down.
I got one of those pet containers and have been feeding him in it since dasy one.
So when I prep the food he goes straight into the container and waits for his tray to arive.
That is very good. He got a brain in his little head.

He put on 2 pounds since I caught him, very ncie to see. He now is looking healthy and full of energy.
Evrything will come, a matter of time.

November 7th is Freckles' birthday. One year ago I got her the Monster Mutt r/c truck to play with and for exercise. I have run this truck every day, usually twice a day and sometimes three times in one day. In all that time, the truck has only needed two parts replaced: the motor and one servo gear. Traxxas builds tough, reliable, and fun r/c toys!

For Freckles' 2nd birthday I got her a 4WD Short Course Truck.

Freckles the Beagle 2nd Birthday and Monster Mutt 1st Birthday! (2 min 35 sec)

Kind of loosing interest in amusing daddy by chasing his silly toy. Despite the exercise Freckles seems to be getting a bit round.

Buddy needs a Tiki dog house

My current delay from getting back in to boat/barge building is the need for a dog house for Buddy. Winter is closing in fast in Cleveland so I must move on this. I'm just going to add progress photos to this post instead of dragging the build out over many. So if your interested, come back and visit this from time to time.

Sigh... Keepin' track of the posting order ..... it looked like a recent post and I just didn't check the date... still mean it though. Haven't been following "Pets" recently because it's a bit close to home again.

P. Raider Pussycat's health took a dive a few weeks ago, probably due to a kidney infection. The vet started talking quality of life but we brought him back after a two week struggle using antibiotics, IV fluids three times a week and procrit injections to bring his red cell count back up. He was his old self again, better in fact. He wasn't just walking in when he heard the can opener pierce a tin can, but galloping in again.

Sunday morning he puked up his breakfast and by Monday he was not eating and lethargic again all of a sudden. So maybe the infection is back, so it was off to the vet Monday and then today he added tremors, so back to the vet for a blood work-up and we are upping his IV fluids to 100ml once a day plus pain and BP meds. I am really worried about him, he's only 13-and-a-half. He's only middle aged - like me damnit!

No mater how many times you say to yourself that they are just an animal it does not work. They all work there way into your heart and each time you lose one its like tearing a chunk out of you. The best you can do is give them as much love and care while they are with you and make sure that they don't suffer.
Regards,
Gerald.

Thanks guys! The condolences really do help. While every one is special, this little kitty was very special to me, he was 'my' cat and I has his human. He'd almost always met me at the door when I came in, and I was his favorite place for belly rubs and trading physical affection. I carried him home in my arms (he was a feral kitten) and he died in my arms as well.

This one really hurt because he fought to hang on to the very end, trying to stay alert even though he was so terribly weak he could hardly hold his head up until the sedative took him. Even then he didn't 'relax until the potassium stopped his brave little heart.

I know it is supposed to be 'for the best,' and that his kidneys were beyond repair and now he is 'not hurting' any longer, but I really have to wonder if I really had the right to make that decision for him.

As it is I am still coming to grips with the fact that he won't be waiting at the door or making his break down the top flight of steps to check around the corner of the banister ever again.

Blaze, on the left, is the only one left of Raider's little family.

Truth, truth, truth! And it is, of course, because they really are more than 'just an animal.' Each one is a unique and special little individual and they bond with us just as we bond to them.

I wonder what causes kidney failure in our animals. Is it something we give them in their diet?

We had our cat on medication for that, and she lived another three years, but our dog was diagnosed as untreatable, and we had him put to sleep.

Craig, it is a better choice to end an animals suffering than to prolong it. You did the right thing.

Karl, there are many foods that we humans eat without issue, but for a dog can cause renal failure, and other serious issues as well as certain death in a short amount of time.

Tom, thanks for posting the articles on what dogs should not eat.

Although I was well aware of these items as being a no-no for a dog, it's always good to see the list out in front as a reminder.
