beginner truck comparison

i'm beginning in monster truck r/c. i'm currently looking at the wild
dagger by tamiya and the stampede by traxxas. my basic questions are:

-differences in top speed and battery usage. the wild dagger has 4wd
twin 540 motors. the stamped has a stinger 20-turn. what are the
differences in motors, performance, and power consumption?

-off road capability. the wild dagger has independent double wishbone
with coil shocks (not oil-filled). the stampede has independent
y-bone suspension with oil-filled shocks. what's the best set-up?

-tranny. the wild dagger has 2 differentials (4wd). the stampede has
ball bearing tranny with slipper clutch. what's the advantage of
slipper clutch?

the price's are pretty low-end. 140 for wild dagger and 85 for
stampede.
i'd love to hear someones experience who's owned either or both of
these.

The Stampede is faster and runs longer. The Wild Dagger has 4WD.

Oil-filled shocks are much better than the Tamiya friction shocks.

I'm looking at a diagram of the Dagger, and I don't think it uses a
double-wishbone suspension.

http://www.geocities.com/allycats_2000/breakdown.htm

It looks like they both use standard A-Arm style suspensions, the only
real difference is that the Stampede arms single molded pieces, while
the Dagger arms consists of two halves held together with screws.

I found this nice picture of a double-wishbone suspension:

http://www.lexus-europe.com/t/t01_03_01.html

Reading about some other Tamiya models, I see that they call it a
double-wishbone suspension even though it's not (e.g., in the
description of the re-released Dyna-Storm:

http://www.tamiyausa.com/product/rc/...ies/49190.html

It's not really a double-wishbone, since the upper link is simply a
straight rod instead of a wishbone. The T/E-Maxx suspension is a real
double-wishbone suspension.

The slipper clutch is a friction-operated clutch between the spur gear
and the drive train. It prevents the motor from stripping gears in the
drive train if the wheels get locked up due to an obstacle; the clutch
slips before the gears break. It can also be adjusted to provide
anti-slip acceleration of the truck, but that wears out the slipper
clutch very quickly.

I own a Stampede, but not a Wild Dagger. I like the 4WD capability,
but the Wild Dagger is heavier, slower and has fewer parts available
in hobby shops (unless you live near a hobby shop that is really
well-stocked with Tamiya parts).

In my opinion, if you're going to bother with the Wild Dagger, you
might as well move straight up to an E-Maxx. You'll get a much more
capable truck for not much more money. I did, and the E-Maxx is a
grass-chomping machine.

The Stampede, on the other hand, is one of the cheapest thrills in RC,
and virtually indestructible. I've done stuff to my Stampede that made
me wince, and the only part I've ever broken is a front caster block.

Don't have experience of either, but I'll try some general answers:

A 540 is usually a 30-turn motor, so two of them should provide *about* the same power as a 15-turn (i.e. slightly more than a
single 20-turn).

It depends on the gearing, though, and I'm guessing that the Wild Dagger is geared more for rock-climbing than outright speed.
They'll probably have similar performance and run-time, though the Dagger might be better at serious off-roading whilst the Stampede
will probably drive and jump better.

To me, y-bone sounds like the same thing as wishbone so no difference. Oil-filled shocks are good, though, particularly for
high-speed handling and for jumps. Remember you can upgrade the Dagger if you want.

The slipper clutch protects the drivetrain from shock loading when landing from jumps, and can be loosened to keep the front wheels
on the ground with hotter motors. With a 20 (quite 'mild'), this is less important.

Again, 4WD will help if you're rock-climbing whilst the 2WD transmission will be slightly lighter and more efficient.

Ball bearings are *the* most important upgrade - if you buy a car without them, buy a set at the same time and fit them when you
first build. They prevent the stub axles wearing out and becoming sloppy, increase run-time and increase performance.

HTH,
Jonny

Re: beginner truck comparison

If i can put my idea... I hown a stampede, think about the ground
clearance... and
think about the possible speed..
Take a look at www.ultimatestampede.com to see what you can do with a
stampede..
