Converting Sky Rider foam glider to RC

Hi.
I bought one of those five dollar Sky Rider foam gliders, found in many food stores.

I have an old .049 engine, and a few microservos. What I am looking to do is add the engine and convert the free flight glider into an RC Powered sailplane.

I have heard that there was an article about this in a recent Model Airplane News, does anyone know what month? Also can you point me to some other info about this?

Thanks!

Do a search, alot of them have been done here! Lots of nice pics ofthem also. I just did the 25" from Wal-Mart. Came in at 3.75oz. ready to fly, and wing loading about 6.5oz. Flew like a BRICK! Good luck. I'm building the BUG from RCM June 2001. I blew the plans up at work, and have got them ready to go, just waiting for the carbon fiber for the spars and fuse boom to get here now. Later....Chris

If you use the 049, you will of course need to use pactra formula u to protect the foam from fuel.

I don't know about an 049, but several have been converted to electric flyers.

Dave

First you get an 049, then you get out the 409??? Coincidence?

I have found three articles on converting the 4.5 ft. Sky Rider foam glider to piston-powered RC. The most complete is by Roy L. Clough in the September 1997 issue of R/C Report. He uses a Cox .02 engine in both tractor and pusher installations. Jef Raskin in September 1994 Model Airplane News used an .049 engine in his conversion. A brief piece by Duke Iden is in the May 1995 issue of Model Aviation. If you do not have access to these magazines photocopies can be ordered from the Librarian at AMA.
