PIPER PAWNEE 80" from H-9 CONVERSION THREAD

Well this guy is about 2 weeks away, I hope, so I thought I'd start this to get some ideas.

http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products...ProdID=HAN4030

I'm not really sure this should be considered a "Glow to Electric" because H-9 seems to have made all the provisions for electric flight but I'm going to do a few mods.

First and foremost, this guy will have an operating dusting system, and this is were I may need some advice.

If you folks don't think this is an appropriate subject for THIS forum, let me know.

Signing on!
Mine has been on order at the LHS for a couple of weeks now and hope to see it soon. I am planning on a Scorpion 4025-16 on 8s lipo's or 10s A123's. Big motor for some aerotowing.

Don,
Can't wait to see how you are going to do the spray system. A long time ago I seen a guy use a fueltank and a perry pump to spray the water thru copper tubing. But that was a 1/4 scale. Good luck and I'll be watching. I'm very intrested in this project.

Best of luck
Mike

Can't do a whole lot until she gets here but I have a few ideas.

Spray would be hard to see and liquid is heavy so I'm going to try to simulate dusting.

Right now I'm thinking along the lines of a servo operated hopper with a rear that could be lowered to allow release and then retracted to stop the flow.

With the prop wash I don't think I'll need a pump to dispense flour and it's cheap and visible.

I've got one on order too. I'm interested in adding an Aerosound system, with the low voltage amp, a sound module programmed with the Lycoming sounds, and a single 4" speaker. I believe that such a system (which can be fed by the motor battery pack) would weigh around 7 or 8 ounces. Any ideas on the optimum powertrain with this additional weight?

I would look at an Axi 4130/16 on 6 cell LiPo or 7 cell A-123.

I'm testing an MAS 14x9x3 right now and it looks like a good fit.

I'm going to be useing a Turnigy C5065-400 (Hobby City) on 6 cell A-123 2 pack.

33Amps
17.0 Volts
600 watts
6200 RPM
112 oz thrust (Measured).

If this doesn't look ok I'm going to the 4130.

BTW: I called this morning because Horizon changed delivery from "Late Feb" to "Coming Soon" and they said it will ship next week.
We shall see.

Don,
I hope your right on the ship date, my LHS says it will be mid March. Horizon web site just changed their availability to early March. I may just have to pack this one away till next Winter if its any later than that.
You may also want to reconsider the flour for dusting, it absorbs water quickly. I vaguely remember reading somewhere that a Top Gun competitor used ashes as a dusting medium since every other powder he tried would clog the nozzles, it was written up years ago in Model Airplane News. An e-mail to Frank Tiano may get you a name or contact.

well, I called Horizon just now and they said it should ship the end of next week Soooooo I would say it's a definate MAYBE.

As for the flour, I'm not going to dispense it thru tubes and nozzles but from a hopper.
This will be a DUSTER not a SPRAYER. I hope.

I may just run the flour past the hot motor and drop cup cakes.

Is the weight claimed by H9 at 8-9 lbs correct? I have to wonder if a 46 will fly this plane
