Me? oh heck no. I'm the slowest builder in the world. I have all the parts and the only thing holding me back is repairing the covering on the tail. I also have this A-26 project that's holding me up and I just took up RC 1:10 Short Course racing in my Traxxas Slash. With another kid on the way, I got no time left for the poor Sundowner.

Nice sob story eh?

You see what this guy is doing with Turnigy 50-65 motors?

http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1353766

Intriguing. I probably wouldn't go that route (no resale value), but if he is a good winder, very cool. I just don't like he is keeping the stock magnets.

I've been doing the same thing. It's funny he's even using the same wire I used when I rewound the 80-100. On big motors, you can get quite a bit more copper in them than the factory wind.

Why do it? Well it cost me less than $200 for a motor that Hacker charges $900 for. You can also change the kv if needed.

The last one I just wound is a 5065 Turnigy SK motor. The magnets seem fine, though not curved like Scorpion/Hyperion.

Spit's Sundowner 50 Data Follow-up

8lbs 3 oz RTF
HK 4035-560
CC ICE 100
APC 11x11
8S-4000

I updated the ESC firmware and since I was under the hood decided to also download the ESC Data from the recent motor test and taxi test.

Scorpion Motor Calc:
110 amps
3250 watts
14709 prop rpm

ESC data download
116 amps
3297 watts
14429 prop rpm

Pretty happy with the accuracy of Scorpion Motor Calc; if the pitch speed is accurate too (153mph at 29v) I should have a speed demon. Pulling 16 amps more than ESC and motor rated for, but under the max watts (4200). ~ 1-1/2 clicks off max power gets me under 100 amps. Anyone know if the ICE 100 has a burst capacity - I can't find any info other than 100 amp max. Thanks Steve C and XPC for the info. LCS

Hi,
im am running my Sundowner 50 with a Eflite power 46,CC Ice 100,11x12 Apc E prop,and on a 5cell.
I really like it but want more speed its at 95 mph level on the radar gun.I am thinking of a Hyperion 4025-10 or Scorpion 4025-12 motor on either 6 cell,or even better on 8cell.
the Hyperion 4025-10 is a 505kv,and the Scorpion is 4025-12 is 460kv.
I think im not gonna get alot more speed with a 6cell because im now using 5cell on the power 46,670kv
So i just dont know what motor to go with,
The Hyperion 4025-10,505 kv on 6 or 8cell,
Or Scorpion 4025-12 460 kv, on 8cell.
I wanna hopefully get my Sundowner to 120mph or better level,
What do you guys think ?
Thanks for the help,
Dan

I have the Scorpion 4035-560 and highly recommend it. You can get it at A Main Hobbies cheaper than anywhere else. You can read about my set-up at the below link. In a nut shell I'm spinning an APC 11x11 at 14.4K RPM and pulling 116 amps (16 more than max continuous for the Scorpion) with an 8S-4000. Look forward to hearing about the upgrade.

hi,
So you are running the Scorpion 4035-560kv,thats the heli version?
Also how do you mount the motor because you mount it from the front, and not the back?
I was thinking of putting 2,4 cells,3600mah in it and running it in series,Do you think i have to do any cuting to get them in there?
I may go with the Hyperion 4025-505kv motor,i can mount it from the back so i dont have to do any mods,,
So i should be allittle less power than your setup because i might go with the 505kv Hyperion 4025-10 505kv!
So u must be going 130mph level with your setup?
thanks for the help,
Dan
