My son and I are new to the world of RC. For fun, we just completed construction of an RC car using Lego as the platform. As a disclaimer, it has lots of room for improvement (we were somewhat limited by the parts we had on hand), but it sure has been fun! Cool little project - nice, reasonable speed like you said. We await the next version - off road stadium truck with full suspension and a bigger poweplant!

I imagine if you built the basic frame solid enough, you could make break away lego panels and make a couple demo derby cars

Actually, it can go a lot faster than is possible to control in the house so perhaps a little lower gearing could give it a lot more power with the same motor.

I definitely think full suspension would be nice, gotta get some more lego sets to find the right parts for that!
