The top looks good . The fibre glass tape doesn`t last long once it gets a bit of sun on it . Drop around 1 night & I`ll show you how to put some step hinges on .

Yah.... thought so Wazz.

Crap... have to pull them off and redo, maybe. Still tempted just to hook it all up and at least have a fly with it. Change them if/when needed.

Dingo - I remember you showing me those step hinges when I picked the JD up. Stuffed if I can remember now. Might give you a bell and drop around so you can see for yourself if you think it's worth flying as it is. No speed records to attempt here - just some frontside fun with something that's probably going to penetrate a bit more wind than my present L-plater fleet.

BTW - it's not what I'd call 'fibreglass tape' as such. It's that 90deg cross-hatched Scotch-Tough stuff. Sticks like st to a blanket...

In the side-on's, you can see I didn't sand the bottom of the ailerons - so they stick out in a pointed 'V' a bit...

PS - the pics in that link Spotter - are they what you guys call 'Step Hinges' ?
How to skin a cat method 42: Cut off the front edge of your elevon back to the bottom leading edge - the non hinged bit. I think you'll find the new elevons can now be step hinged to the bottom surface of the wing and give you the right profile without a heap of sanding. The elevons may be a little narrower than design but I think it will be close enough although I'm not familiar with the jw profile.

edit: clearer with a picture - but it does look narrow.

I was going to mention the Tape v sun issue but Bruce got there first. Its fine to use it(IME) if the glass tape is covered with some coloured Zagi tape, keeps the UV out. If your pulling the elevons off again, another thing thats worthwhile (particularly for us crashers ) is to snip an inch or two off the outboard end of the elevon, and fix the short piece solidly to the wing. Hot glue or goop, then some tape, should do. That'll help save servos and elevons in the inevitable cartwheel landing/arrival.
Nice covering job, BTW.

All the responses above are great suggestions, and all of them would work.

A couple of caveats:
If you do decide to cut your elevons, make sure the new forward edge is dead straight. If it isn't, it will bind somewhere.
UV does affect fibre tape, but in practice it takes quite a while before it "browns off" and loses it's stick. I usually have to rebuild long before fibre tape goes off. Little squares of packing tape resolves the issue completely.
Those elevons look quite short in the chord already. Might be worth buying another set of elevons and covering them ready for when you snap the end off those ones.
To delay the inevitable snap off the end of the elevon, just cut them 1/2" short of the wingtip. JW's fly perfectly well with a much shorter elevon.
Use clear sellotape to seal the gap after doing step hinges.

Sorry to intrude on the building discussion but for what itís worth here is my second attempt at slope soaring.

Vid is just under 4 minutes, cut down from the 30 minutes of flight time.

The clock in the camera is wrong and I have had to call on expert help (the Missus) to get it right for the next time

Slope soar (3 min 39 sec)

Hey Pete have you been out to that hill on the S side of town, about 10k out? Has a quarry at the bottom and you see it on the road to Cowell. Often wondered about it when we'd go to Tumby but never went in there. Maybe I'll come over next time the other half has clinical placement in Whyalla.

Yes Gizzo, know the one, it's on the Eight Mile Creek rd.
Only problem is it's on private property and there is nil access to the top.
Would do no harm to request access permission but it would be a hell of a hike to the top

Send me a pm anytime you plan to come over to arrange some flight time
